So I'm looking for a new job, and I've agreed to buy my mates car for ~£2200 in the summer. Between getting a new job (hopefully soon) and then, I'll be starting diving lessons again, so I need to save up a good £3000 at least to cover insurance as well as buying the car.

Older, wiser members of BF2S I call upon you to help motivate me and give me tips on saving money, and also some of you young urchins that seem capable of it as well, all help will be greatly received, and where possible, karma'd.

Thanks. Cammy

I have one advise for you what im doing right now to get some money. Check your room and sell all the stuff what you dont need!
You should regist yourself on ebay or on some sort of site. So you can get rid of the stuff what you dont really need.
Old pc games, dvds and all kind of stuff. Remember what you dont need could be worthy for someone else. You can get some money with this!

And you having a job is also good.

Good luck!

Yeah they wont be much good in the short term which you're working to.  So he's right, spend less and be a total, total tight ass.  Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves and all that shit.

Create a target to save per week/month and stick to it.  Stick the money into a separate account, doesn't matter where, just have it somewhere separate from your current account.

Actually, that is good advice.  If you aren't able to have the self-control and will power to not spend money on frivolous things then you won't be able to save any money.  The best way to save money is to use discipline when buying or deciding to buy things.

All you have to is, when you think about spending money on something, consider if you really need to buy it, take a moment to think. If you feel you want something so badly, go away and think about it for a day or two, don't fall foul of impulse buying.

Also same goes for junk spending, i find even if i go to out to town, i don't actually buy anything but by the time i've bought a coffee, had lunch etc etc.....i've spent £20!

Save some money each month.

Say you have £300 a month, and uses £200 on needed stuff, save the last £100.
That can rise to a high amount quickly..

Look at your bills and what you don't need. If you're paying for cable tv and don't watch tv often, cancel your subscription. Same goes for maybe a cell phone or anything else with a monthly payment. Also don't eat out, ever. It gets expensive and it adds up quickly. I can spend $6 at a local grocery store and eat for 2 days or I can spend $7 at Burger King and eat lunch only to be hungry again later in the day. I used to go to Burger King at lunch everyday when I worked full time in the summer and realized how much money I was wasting. I instead made a big sandwich at home, bring some fruit, small bag of chips, and a drink to work and I ended up more filled after eating that lunch which cost a lot less than Burger King.

Invest into a CD account in your Bank if you have enough to put it in. These fu***rs (CD's) force you to save.

You need to outline a budget. Take your total expected income, then calculate how much you need to set aside to reach your goals. When you've done that, see if you'll actually have enough left over after your regular expenses, and if you don't, shave off the things you can be without. Do it on a daily basis for a month or two, so you'll see the results sooner and keep yourself motivated, and then do it on a weekly basis 'till you've reached your goal.

I used to do this when I made next to nothing, and it's actually satisfying to see how much you can manage to save by shaving off spendings that could go towards things you'd rather want.

As for accounting, just keep it all in your chequing account. Interest won't matter over a period as short as this.

open a Lloyd's current account then set up the on line doohickey you then get a higher rate of interest on your on line savings account attached to your current account, then set up a standing order from your current account to your savings account for the day you get paid. Sorted you won't even miss the money.

TBH Jamseys advice is perfectly valid and ^ what he said ^ is very true, I bought what I wanted when I wanted for about a year and never had any cash and usually nothing much to show for what I'd spent. I stopped that about 18 months ago and now there's 4k sat in my bank waiting to buy me a new car

Depends on how bad you want the car ... divide the sum you need on how many months you have to save and whoopy you the sum you need to save each month for this to happen, then decide if this is doable or not and what you have to sacrifice ...

So lets say 6 months, £500 pr month to reach £3000 ... can you do that?

Spend less money, work hard, sell stuff you don't need, spend more time on bf2s <-------- the last one is free of charge

Get a big piece of paper or open an excel sheet and write down EVERYTHING you spent money on in a week or a month, and then total it all up. That'll tell you how much you're spending. Then make yourself a budget; cut things out from your list that you don't need, limit your spending on other things, and have a set amount that you'll put into savings each week or month. The most important part is sticking to you budget, so having it written down or printed out and on display above your desk or somewhere where you'll see it often is a good idea.

All of the coins you get as change may be rolled and exchanged for cash if you are desperate.
Don't buy bottled water. Drink from fountains/taps/faucets. It's all the same unless you live in the third world.
Learn to cook if you haven't already, buy food from the grocery store and make your own meals.
If you are feeling really ambitious look up what local plants are edible and get foraging. Shamrocks are quite tasty...
Don't waste your money on frivolous things such as alcohol or drugs, just cop them from your mates, then treat them when you have a surplus of cash and you feel you owe them.
Go to friends'/girlfriends' for supper.
Don't buy new clothes or tech you don't need.
Don't forget about the money you'll need for petrol and tolls.
Learn how to gamble and go buck wild if all else fails.

Don't carry cash, if its not in your pocket you can't spend it.
Don't buy anything you don't need.
Do your clothes have holes in them? Thats OK, you still don't need to buy new ones.
Need lunch? Don't buy McDs, buy a loaf of bread, and maybe a piece of cheese.
Don't buy soft drinks, ever. Water is fine.
