I know there's a lot of headset threads out there but I think my situation is kinda unique.  I'm trying to decide between getting something like a) this (USB 7.1) with no internal sound card or b) an Asus Xonar DX with some headset.

I'm having trouble finding a 5.1/7.1 headset with 3.5mm jacks to go with my Xonar - do they even make such things?  Recommend me some kickass headset to go nicely with a Xonar.

My budget is no more than $100 for the headset and I'm willing to dish out $90 for the Xonar.  I really want a nice headset, so I'd like to spend at the very least $60-$70 on it.

EDIT:

Just found this Tritton 4x3.5mm headset, I'm leaning towards buying it:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6826235003

USB, with no sound card? How the fuck does that work?

Steelseries Siberia for the headset.  The Xonar DX sounds good for sound.

the sound card is inline, on the USB cord.

QFT, I'm using Siberias right now, better than my mates Sennheisers for gaming and about as good as them for music (half the price too).

The soundcard connects to the motherboard, how?

Right, haffey's got it.  The headset just plugs into a USB port, not into some fancy $90 sound card.  Of course I still have on-board audio if you count that as a sound card.

Via the USB port.

Never used one, but probably not as good as a high-end internal sound-card or on-board audio, but not bad for the price.

The speakers I currently have connect by USB, I believe the sound card is built in the sub woofer though.

I've decided to get the Siberias without the Xonar, as they only need a single 3.5mm jack and will work fine with my on-board audio.  Thanks all for the help.

the sound quality will be better with the Xonar, or so i hear.  i've always used onboard sound/a cheap 5.1 diamond sound card.  i'd really like to hear the difference with a Xonar though.  buy it and let me know how different it is.

I've used one of those $20 sound dongles on an old pc ... decent sound for $20.

sound quality will be better, therefore it's ironic that you heard it was good.  because you hear better sound quality.  get it now, canadian?

Get the Xonar. USB powered DACs are bound to be noisy and weak.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
