It depends on the state really.  For instance, there are more assholes in New York, San Francisco and Los Angels than there are in the rest of the country combined.

No. All the arrogant/loudmouth Americans take all the attention away from the quieter and more, eh... 'human/civilised'? I cant think of the right word.... courteous? There are some, but then again think of all of those who aren't.

All the American's I've met have been good sorts.  Friendly, fun, and educated.

Anybody who bases their opinion of Americans on the actions of GWB (like so many do) is an idiot.

That pic is a bulls-eye Kmarion ... Norwegian sport supporters abroad are very easy to spot, tends to be the same with Swedes and Danes but not quite so "much" as the Vikings from Norway ...

A group of 20 Norwegians can easily be taken for a hundred because of the spectacle they make ...

Other than that we are usually very well received around the world, on my many journeys I'm still surpriced when you see people light up when they discover you are not English or American ...

We had one incident in Jamaica in particular that made me happy to not be English, waiting to enter the country in the passport line all the natives had their own express line and all foreigners was distributed in 4 other quite long lines ... randomly some guards singled out a whitey in one of the lines and asked to see the passport, if it was British he was told to get back in line ... in the back end of the line ... a guard approach my wife and me and asked for the passports and i though fucking hell now we have to get further back and wait even longer ... he immediately saw the letters Norway on the outside of the passport and yelled to a clerk behind an empty counter "I have two Norwegians man, what to do about them?" and the clerk answered "Bring them about man" and we got escorted over to the empty counter and asked why we came on a plane from England to visit Jamaica ... i told him there was no direct flights from Norway and that we were to attend a wedding between a local girl and my brother ... he lights up like it's Xmas and wishes us a happy stay and asks the guard to escort us out of the airport and get us a cab

In general, and as a stereotype yes, sorry.

I used to work at Ford in the UK, it was interesting to see Americans come over on their two year tours.
They'd arrive, fat, loudmouthed and whiny.
'Holy shit, that's my lease car? It only has a 1.6litre engine? How can it even do 5mph? I want a V8 goddammit! Petrol is HOW much a gallon? You guys should have a goddamn revolution, its your right to have cheap gas, fuck the planet.'
'You call that a sandwich? I need ten of those just to make it to lunch. It is lunch? Ohmygawd. When do the donuts get here. You DON'T HAVE donuts every day? That's it I'm going to kill myself'

After about six months they settled down, lost some weight, stopped running to the coke machine every half hour.

Then they'd go back to the US for a two-week family visit, and come back.
'Holy shit, did you know everyone in the US is about 2 stone overweight? They whine like little kids about nothing, my soda is too cold, my soda is too warm, I'm not walking 100 yards to the restaurant, get me a taxi, waah waah waah.'
'I was in a hotel and this guy said 'hey little Mexican guy, get my cases NOW!' How rude can these guys be? I guess I must have been like that.'

OK I'm generalising but at least Americans themselves sometimes get it.
The ones who have lived abroad usually have some perspective and are OK.
The ones who think they understand the rest of the world because they once went on a cruise around the Caribbean not so much.

I have noticed Americans latch on to weird non-sensical ideas and just won't be shifted from them.
eg A fuel systems engineer was 100% convinced that oil was created by the earth in some underground geothermal factory.
There was in fact unlimited oil because the earth produced it naturally and continuously, it could never run out. Anyone who said different or that it should cost more than a dollar a barrel was a crazy person.

I have also noticed Americans eat until they can't physically eat any more.
The portions are huge, they order way too much and cram it in until they're pale, sweating and trembling.
And their fellow diners egg them on to clear their plate.
No wonder they're frigging fat.
Look, I know you already admitted it, but you're still generalizing.

I'm going to guess that the slurry of unnecessary entitlement programs our government hosts to increase citizen dependance should be thanked for much of the limp-wristed whininess normally attributed to Americans. The weight problem is a combination of unhealthy diet (partially thank the FDA for approving and condemning stuff based on economy rather than science), lack of sleep, high stress (I'm not trying to dismiss the third world here, but explaination doesn't belong in this topic) and not much place in our schedule for exercise. Some people, even if they don't watch TV, have to work hard to fit in a half-hour of jogging.

Going back to entitlement, Americans are less driven to educate themselves or their children than they should be, leading to disastrous health and financial conditions in what otherwise would be a greater gem of a nation.

Thanks, Uncle Sam!

If all the experience you have of America and Americans is from the media and from contact with the standard tourist then yes.
But.
I have been to the US 3 times (4 time this summer coming) I was at the Burning man festival twice where I met some "alternative" Americans. I have 3 American friends who have moved to my town. From those experiences with those people I would say No.
Plus. I have read Plenty of Chomsky over the years. Now I am reading more positive literature  (founding fathers etc) and its giving me a more balanced view of the place.

Of course I'm generalising, and picking the extreme examples to illustrate my pastiche.
There are plenty of sensible grounded americans who don't weight 200kg and have travelled abroad.

You can also thank:
The sugar industry for bribing your govts for generations
The car and oil industries for being in league together and with your govts
Your spectator sports for being so dull, and long, that the only worthwhile thing to do while watching them is eat and drink yourself senseless

No since despotic lands usually behead, stone, mutilate or rape you if you don't keep your head down and say thanks after a good organise beating on your village...

I really don't know enough americans to answer this question properly, but from how the media presents it, many are arrogant to say at least.

I voted yes but then I thought about it a little and I would change my answer to no.

I'd say people grow up to expect to live in the conditions they had as a child or even better and thats probably the rule no matter where you go.

Joke or not, there are enough who sprout it as gospel.
Baseball 'world series' consisting of one country.

Spoiled? yes.
All rich western nations generally are though. People expect a standard of living constant with those they directly see living around them.

Gluttonous? yes.
Similar to above, but more so for Americans. You (seem to) have a culture where everything needs to be 'bigger and better', from your houses, your cars to your food. Last years 'oil prices' are a good example, you whinge, bitch and complain about increasing oil prices when you still pay a fraction of most of the rest of the world.

Stupid? too many.
One example (of many): My friend went to Sweden for a holiday, there he met some Americans, they got into a conversation and at one point it goes:
American: So anyway, where are you from?
Friend: Australia.
American: Ohh wow, your English is pretty good for an Australian.
Friend: Yeah, yours isn't bad either .
