I wish they would stop this shit.

9800GTX+ -----> GTS 250
8800GT/9800GT ------> GTS 240

New BIOS omg!  Let's rename our cards again!

If they named the cards properly to begin with, they wouldn't be in this mess.

So it started as 8800GTS to 9800GTX to 9800GTX+ (admitedly with a shrunk process) to GTS 250.

I stopped believing in the nV namers a long time ago.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'm waiting for the 40nm chips from both ATi and nVIDIA.

Especially GT212 sounds great. 384SP and GDDR5
Knowing how nVIDIA bs everyone with the names.... they probably name it to GTX 290...............

Oh ! Now they can raise the prices and trick more people in to buying old(ish) tech!

Instead of focusing on next generation, this?!

Nvidia, Spoiler (highlight to read):

I already bought a low-profile 9800GT for PhysX. 250/240 can kiss my ass.

I have a low-profile 9800GT as my main card (originally purchased so it would fit in a Dell, currently don't have cash to upgrade, card still works nicely).  I was thinking GTX 280 (since it has the two six pin plugs, which is what my PSU has, I don't have 8-pin )

It's actually going to be used as a main card until this summer. Bottleneck or no bottleneck, it beats what I have now.

GTX 280 has 6- and 8-pin connectors. GTX 285 has two 6-pins.

At this point its getting very hard to justify spending over 500€ on the GT212 or RV790 CF as the RV870 and GT300 which have DX11 support are not far away... might hoot one of these HD4850s for couple months...

Now WTF nVIDIA

Some things really puzzled us. VR-Zone got to learn that Nvidia is planning to rebrand nForce 780a SLI chipset to nForce 980a SLI and the specs remain unchanged. ASUS leaked some details regarding this nForce 980a SLI chipset when they announced their upcoming M4N82 Deluxe board.
edit: OMG ATi too...

AMD follows Nvidia - Renames HD 3xxx to HD 4xxx
ATI did some selective rebranding of their Radeon HD 3000 generation to HD 4000 but this time they did it in their official Catalyst 9.1 driver.

The file called CH_75108.inf says it all. It shows 11 new cards branded as Radeon HD 4230, HD 4250, HD 4570, HD 4580, HD 4730 and finally HD 4750.

Take a quick look at this part of inf file

Doesn't neccessarily mean they're not new sub-models of the given GPUs.

if they really would launch 11 new cards based on those chip as the market is already filled by them.... they are either doing epic failure or the product developement section has had one hell of party smoking some nice shit.

Nvidia's naming practices have been .. amusing.. since the days (1990's) when you could take a $200 Geforce, solder on $0.05 worth of resistors, and magically turn it into a $2000 Quadro "Professional CAD" IRB-SRS-BZNS card.

I understand efficiency of making multiple products on one wafer fab line, but.. seriously.. 10x markup because you enabled a couple of minor CAD-specific firmware items?  There's making a profit on the business professional side - then there's outright rape-by-horse-cock
