PHILADELPHIA — Authorities are trying to figure out where five second-grade boys got packets of heroin that they were passing around their Philadelphia elementary school.

Sgt. Ray Evers told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the boys thought the powder was candy.

Authorities say a gym teacher spotted the boys with the packets on Tuesday morning.

A school district spokesman says one boy put a small amount of the drug in his mouth but quickly spit it out. The other boys said they only touched the drug and none ingested it.

A school nurse confirmed that the boys showed no signs of illness, but they were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for further examination.

Police say no charges have been filed.

A drug dealer walks to a playground, hands some kids and packet of candy.
They aren't smart enough or old enough to realize.

It's not that uncommon.

Since it costs a lot, I think it is. I doubt dealers just hand out drugs to random kids for free.

How big were the packets?
He could get them hooked, and a bunch of other kids hooked, and make a ton of cash.

Or they just found it on the street, maybe someone dropped a pack.

You need to aim a little higher than kids that age who do not even know what they are supposedly hooked on or have the means to buy any amount of Heroin to make it worthwhile.

How much money would a 2nd grader have?  If I recall correctly, $5 was a ton of money for me to have when I was that young...

Could argue he'd demand more money from his parents, but that never gets a kid anywhere

This is not surprising.

I grew up in philly, I'm almost sure that some of my classmates (elementary) were on cocaine. By middle school they certainly were.
