Noob question about Adobe After Affects

Hey,

I have the "Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro" but would like to make some cool effects like gun fire and blood etc. Is it possible to just take a video file and open it in after affects and edit it there? Or do I have to use Adobe Premiere Pro aswell? If so, what other options are there for making cool post-production effects?

u can open it it after effects and edit it.

seems like I can't get those programs here in Sweden, and they seem very expensive as well.
