I love the style of bf2s, and I've been using FluxBB for a while now and it seems very alike bf2s.  But I know bf2s is using PunBB.  I am now setting up a home webserver and would like to incorporate forums.  What are the main differences between FluxBB and PunBB and which one would you recommend?

I'd recommend phpBB3 or SMF.

i believe he did, but it's a very standard looking theme.  it's installed by default and it just felt similar to "home" for me.

hmm, i don't really want to go with SMF, i've been on some SMF forums and i don't like them too much.  aren't all the BBs kind of similar?

well i gotta say that theme looks pretty DAMN close to chuy's . I say sue! j/k

i use SMF, and have for a while, it does have its downfalls but i havent tried using PHPBB. I tried converting but it didnt work right so i just stuck with SMF.

"acquire" vBulletin, it's some kickass forum software.

(I'm assuming you don't want to spend $180 on forum software )

Both are fast, lots of features, lots of mods, easy to mod, large mod-friendly community, etc.

PunBB shares some of the above, but IMO it's really bland and plain.

I highly advise you don't do that. vBulletin and IPB (and others I'm sure) have validation checks every like month or so, to see if you are using legit software with a legit registration code. Pirated ones will be nullified which means these checks will have been removed, but since they are so deeply embedded, it's not always a guarantee that they're removed and well...it's really easy to get fucked hard with that.

The open source forum software available is just as good as vBulletin or IPB. vBulletin is excellent when it comes to very large sites, but hell, I'd consider this site quite large and it's using free software too.

FluxBB is a fork of PunBB. The 1.2.* versions are virtually identical - see below. The only reason you're using FluxBB on that free forum hosting site is because the guy who owns it used to be a core developer of PunBB and forked, with the other core developers to FluxBB. So the former core developers of PunBB are now developing FluxBB and PunBB is now owned by some Russians ... I know where I'd rather be.

I recommend using FluxBB 1.2.*, soon to be renamed to FluxBB 1.4 - where extra features are going to be added, namely utf-8 support. FluxBB 1.2.* is virtually the same as PunBB 1.2.* as it a direct fork with only a few security fixes and tweaks. Thus making FluxBB marginally better at the current time and soon to be much better as a result of the changes/improvements coming in 1.4.

I do not recommend using PunBB 1.3.* or FluxBB 1.3.*. PunBB 1.3.* is not finished and shouldn't have been released and FluxBB 1.3.* is no longer being developed (and is unfinished) - it is being replaced by FluxBB 2.0.

FYI: phpBB3's CAPCHA has been broken recently, so unless you install an anti-spam mod you're gonna get faggots signing up.

is FluxBB 2.0 coming out in the near feature?  if not, i'll probably get to work on FluxBB 1.2 then.

I wouldn't wait for it.

I'd use FluxBB 1.2 now and then upgrade to 1.4 when it's released (hopefully quite soon) and then eventually upgrade to 2.0.

sounds good, i always like having a side project to work on.

edit: oh wait, just a few more questions.  on pun-bbhosting, it wasn't possible to work in the backend.  for me, it obviously will be.  does that mean i can change things like "there are new messages" link to a simpler, more visible "Messages (1)"?

Yes, though you'll need to know some PHP. Or ask someone for the code.

(I have it, you can ask me)

Surely punBB has a language pack system?

Indeed, but making it display the number of new messages is more than just a localization setting.
