alright, it's the wireless half of the router.  now i remember why i ditched this piece of shit in the first place.  i connected the laptop via ethernet cable and it connects to \\192.168.0.100 fine.  i see the shared docs and the printers.  time to find another WRT54G...

If the one you have now is a WRT54G, hack soem DD-WRT onto it, the WiFi may just live again.

i already have a WRT54G running DD-WRT upstairs with no problems.  i love that router more than anything.

the problem router is downstairs, a D-Link DI-524.  it's always given me nothing but headaches.

Ughh, I has a 524.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
I actually, in a way, wanna say that it's better than my DD-WRT'd wrt54g, it handles torrents like a GOD, but commonly crashed and the web-ui is horrid.

Anyways, I'm off to school.

I'm trying to set up a FreeNAS server right now.

I'm using a dlink WBR-1310, ya its pretty shit. It doesn't have Dynamic DNS ability, and I think FreeNAS needs that to work. I would be using a netgear wgt624 v3, but it stopped workin on me a few months back.

Anyway, I can access the FreeNAS settings via ip address, and I set it up on my work group, and it shows up in my workgroup computers, but I can't transfer anything to it.

I am using Filezilla as my transfer program at the moment, and it wont connect. I assume its because my router doesn't support dynamic DNS?

any other info ya'll need to help me out just ask.

Dynamic DNS has nothing to do with it not working within the internal network, it's so that you can access it from somewhere else without having to remember your IP every time it changes.

Also the Workgroup would have no effect if you're using FTP to copy files,

Most obvious answer would be permissions problems, I would assume that FreeNAS deals with keeping stuff open, but I've never used it so can't vouch.

But yeah, see if somewhere in the FreeNAS config there's an FTP permissions setting, and make sure it's allowed as much as possible(for now, we can lock it down later)

FTP ports forwarded?  everything seems ok?

here was my problem.  this is for XP, although it may still apply.  under windows firewall, i allowed ports, as anyone would do.  problem is, they still weren't technically open.  i had to go under advanced, select my network adapter, and enable FTP server (and HTML for Apache).

If he's running FreeNAS, and he's trying to connect from the internal network(NOT from the internet), then he shouldn't need to forward ports, and Windows Firewall shouldn't block FTP connections going OUT.
But I've seen it do more insane things, so try temporarily disabling Windows Firewall* and see if that helps.

And I'm just going to assume that FreeNAS automatically handles its own Firewall rules when you configure it.

*or completely getting rid of it, what most people don't know is that if you have a router, you're automatically protected from VERY MANY attacks from the internet, and the ones that your router don't block, Windows firewall won't either.

ok, i set up my netgear router and i'm happy to say it works! I'm glad cause that dlink was a nothing better then a paperweight.

My brother is making an account via FreeNAS web GUI, and I told him to disable windows firewall. We'll see what happens...

ya, it didn't work. I disabled firewall on his tower, i tried logging in using filezilla. Ip address is correct, user name is correct and password. it says connecting to server, then

530 login identification failed
error: cannot connect to server

i had wireless security settings set (WEP security with passcode) I thought that was the issue, but the NAS computer is connected to the router directly so?

Update: My brother changed an option in FreeNAS GUI allowing anonymous users, and he said he connected via filezilla...So, I guess he's in now. He tried copying something, but he got another error message in filezilla.

Are there any other free FTP programs anybody might recommend?

Well those errors are being spat back from the server, so something's obviously wrong there.

It could be that you didn't set up the 'Computers Allowed to connect" properly, try finding that setting, it may be set to your IP address, but not your brothers for some reason, change the last 3 digits to * so it allows all computers on your network.

Have you tried logging in with your working credentials?

actually I figured it out. The hard drive we are using for storage wasn't formatted, which we thought it was. So, I formatted it, and now I'm adding a mount point. I'm following THIS tutorial. So far, I created the mount point. I click apply and I got it showing the drive, and status says 'Configuring' at the top it says,

"The mount point list has been changed.
You must apply the changes in order for them to take effect."

I click apply, and the status goes from 'configuring' to 'error - retry'

.....?

I followed the guide. File system is set at UFS. I don't know what is wrong now, but I'll keep fishing.

Well, I figured it out. I chose the wrong option for the partition file system choice when mounting. Anyway, it works. I can log in and transfer stuff. There still is a little quirk. It has two options for FTP user logins, anonymous users only, and local users only. When I pick local users, I can't log in with the user name I created. But when I have it set up anonymous users, I can log in fine with nothing but the host name...

I'll do some more digging on my end.

it's case sensitive.  I thought I originally set my username to be "kevin" but when I tried to log in i got an error.  "Kevin" worked.
