You need a new pillow. It's the last thing you think of in the day. You wake up the next morning, get out of bed, and forget it. You go to bed the same night and think "damn, I need a new pillow". That's what it's been like for me with my computer not shutting down

Finally remembered. Anyway, computer hasn't been shutting down since I made it oohh so many months ago. In XP it'll get to the "Windows is shutting down" bit or whatever and then it'll just hang. In W7 it'll go past all that, screen will switch off, but the computer will stay on.

I've not had an update in aaaages... It doesn't say "installing updates" when it shuts down.

Is it shutting down, or going into standby?

Couple months back, before I reformatted thrice in a row, whenever you put it in stand-by, it'd keep the fans and everything on, got really annoying.

Now it works fine though.(Although it BSOD's excessively)

I'm hitting shut down, so I'm hoping it's shutting down instead of going into standby.

Try shutting down via command prompt with the -f argument

Nahh, not got my XP disk anymore. Borrowed one from GF. Plus, if it's doing it on both installs, it should be something hardware related right?

S3 Sleep Mode in the BIOS.  Not S1 or auto.

Guys, I'm having more or less the same problem the Finray has.

Well, mine is hanging after a reformat. I did a reformat about a week ago. XP SP2 and when I go to shut down the computer, it hangs. I wrote a friend that's pretty good at these kinda things,  he told me to make sure to defrag, after all proggies were back on the hdd. I did, and thought I solved my problem. It didn't though. The computer did shut down the first several times no problem.

Now, when I surf for a bit, or play BF, or I was installing cars into rFactor earlier, and I go to shut down, it still hangs. It acts like a program is hanging up, so I go into Windows task manager to check and make sure nothing is running. Nothing is, but I notice that I can select shut down from WTM, I click shutdown, which it starts to do immediately, but then it hangs at the "Windows is shutting down screen." It takes close to 5 minutes to completely shut down.

Said friend, told me to turn off the page file a time or two and restart, then turn page file back on. I've done that, doesn't help. Page file is currently set at Initial size 2045mb maximum 3067mb.

I've checked my power management options, everything is off. Checked my BIOS for those type settings, don't find any thing in BIOS to be able to change.

Here's my specs if it helps. P4 3.0ghz, Intel 865Perl mobo, 2.0ghz pc3200 ram, Radeon X1650PRO 512MB, XP Pro SP2.

Yes I know it's ancient, I don't plan on upgrading for a while yet.

Btw, I'm still running OEM BIOS, don't know if that matters or not, thought I'd include that info though.

I haven't a clue as to what it could be, any and all help is greatly appreciated, as it's really getting annoying.

Ox

Edit: I thought about posting this in a new thread, but Finray had more or less the same problem. I know how it gets around here if you post the same problem in a new thread. LOL

but it shuts down, right?  my computer takes maybe 2 minutes to shut down, which i think is a little long.  if you're running vista it could take a long time.  vista was really meant to go into standby, and it does it well - my computer wakes up from standby in 5 seconds or so.  that's one of the reasons it "hogs" so much memory.  people just don't use the sleep feature as much then criticize it for being a memory hog.

Way to kill the planet Microsoft.

Anyhoo... to get back OT...

@OP - does it shut down eventually? have you left it long enough to find out?

As haffey implies, windows can take ages to shut down - on a lot of hardware that's absolutely normal.

It can often be as simple a problem as a badly fragmented or very full hard-drive - clear out any crap and defrag with a decent (i.e. not built-in) defragmenter.

But, often it's caused by an issue with drivers taking ages to shut down. Make sure all your drivers are up-to-date and keep any un-needed startup programs and services to a minimum.

Sometimes there's not much you can do about it.

@haffeysucks, it's XP, not Vista.  I know you're only trying to help though.

@Scorpion0x17, I had to use MS defrag, I had Diskkeeper at one time, but can't locate it atm. It's a fresh format, so there's really not much crap on the hdd. I put stuff back on it like pictures, music, videos, etc. As far as programs, it's basically a clean hdd.

Scorpion0x17, I haven't waited long enough to let it shut down completely from the start button. I either end up killing it from the main switch on the back of the case, or try to shut down from Winders task manager. I've clicked the shut down from WTM and let it shut down, but again, it hangs on the "winders is shutting down" screen. I need to do that though, let it shut down, and see how long it takes.

It does sound like something hasn't quiet completed it's update in the registry though. Might do it tomorrow night, allergies giving me hell atm, and I can't be arsed.

Only drivers that I've not updated is video, I just got the Radeon X1650PRO, but only installed the OEM drivers. I've eliminated all unnecessary programs from startup, only 26 processes running, which is the lowest I've ever seen on this system in 4 years.

I know what ya mean about not much ya can do sometimes. I'm thinking this is one of them. I've thought about doing another reformat, but I'd rather have my wisdom teeth pulled again, as to have to reformat once more.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm grateful for any help.

Edit: Would running a registry cleaner possibly help? And can anyone recommend a GOOD free reg cleaner?

Thanks again,

Ox

I once pressed shut down at around 11PM, woke up at 10AM and it was still "shutting down".

My HDD has 1.33GB free I was going to do a reformat soon anyway, so I'll try it without my HDD full.
