Okay, I want to go Linux. Heard a lot about it, mostly good stuff.

I've read you can get a CD version that doesn't install onto your HDD, you just pop the CD in and select boot from CD in your bios..

Is this that version?

Also, some more pros/cons would be appreciated.

Pretty much every distro has a live CD version

Ubuntu is the easiest. 8.10 has some issues here and there, I suggest you get 8.04 x64 Desktop edition

Pro: faster, open source, command line
Con: you'll have to use wine to get your windows apps to run
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Will CoD4, Company of Heros etc work on it?

Also, stopped my 8.10 download 10% way through to download 8.04, just for you maxxie.

Also, I'm assuming it'll be able to read stuff off my HDD, right?

COD4 runs, CoH runs. Just check WineHQ for stuffs that's confirmed to run

You will however have to lern2google

It can mount NTFS partitions fine

I think you mistook lern2google for lern2xfire.

No.

Google knows just as much. There's a guide for everything. All you do is type in the commands. You should only ever seek help when you've tried everything the guide says in 515 different ways. Not when you don't know what ls does.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

That's why you save him until you really need him.

I > Google, but I got tired of it and stopped giving most tech support. That will happen to max sooner or later if you abuse her.

Me thinks that Finray will quit at the first sight of problems with Xorg or his wireless card not functioning

Ah and you have ATI card as GPU, so more problems (dunno why the nvidia drivers in Linux are more reliable than ATI's).

Live CD performance is horrible compared to a install, because it takes so long to read from the CD.

And playing with live CD = massive lag, even if you install it, most games will perform worse than if run under windows. (Few exceptions where Wine runs it faster than windows, for example CoD1)

No need to, just mount the hard drives and use all your stuff there without moving it.

We share opinions on this matter.

No, you don't have those utilities in Linux. You should make the complete install and then read your NTFS files from the Linux partition (the installation will guide you to make it, so if you have a hard time figuring it out select automatic instead of manual). I should say that if you don't like digging out for solutions and use google and the distro's forums, then avoid linux because it is sometimes troublesome. But if you're up to it, you're not going to regret it (I am a linux user since 2004).

Then again, is good to know that at least you're interested in using it, kudos for that

damn, that's gotta be a common problem.  i've had that problem as well, and so has JoshP.  the drivers were impossible to find; i eventually had to do something through Ubuntu's CLI.

Dude. You jump into linux and you don't know how to use the Terminal? Come on. This is just pathetic. You have no idea what you have just gotten yourself into.

Programs -> Terminal and type in the shit line by line

Yeah, I do prefer to learn by jumping in at the deep end. Literally. First time I tried to swim I almost drowned and had to get pulled out. Thanks, I'll look into this shizzzzzzz......
