@Ken I never bothered to fix them. And you don't really declare your major until you go to the school. Even then a lot of places don't require a declaration until sophomore year.
What they have you do is say what you think you want to major in. Some schools like VA Tech have tougher admissions standards for their engineering school than for their business school. Others, like Georgia Tech, have the same standards across the board.

No, I got into an Australian uni just fine. The American system sucks because you have to apply to each individual uni, you have to do essays and interviews and extra curricula shit to get in, and there is no standardised test either (SAT from what I've heard just don't count).
In Australia, you send an application form into UAC (universities admission centre) usually through your school with a list of preferential courses you might like to do at (any) uni. At the end of year 12 you do the HSC (Higher School Certificate) or equivalent and get ranked with a UAI (university admission index) which is used to see which course you will be accepted into. Each course has a specific UAI you need to do better then to be eligible for enrollment based on both the difficulty of the course and the popularity. Then UAC will ask if you want to accept enrollment into your preferred course you were eligible for.
Basically all I had to do was fill in a form (about 10 minutes), wait 2 months and then reply yes to a letter.
