I came across this might oak today. It looks like lightening struck the top of the tree, the bolt traveled down and blew it apart. Only the inside of the tree was burned.

Coooooool.
There was a tree in my town that was 200 years old and they were gonna cut it down to pave a road there.
Residents didn't like it so they made a petition and raised enough money to re route the road.
After construction began it got hit by lightning XD

That kind of stuff never gets old.

Where were you out (hiking)? That looks a lot greener than I imagine California right now.

We've got bunches of those around here. For awhile Tampa was the lightning capital of the world.

I bet you when that tree fell in the woods it made a sound.

we had a scrub oak get struck by lightning in front of the high school.  it sat there for ten years, like a dazed rape victim, before finally succumbing to rot.  science teachers loved it.

edit, I cover a lot of ground in three hours.  These are California Live Oaks, so called because people often think they are dead, as we get not too much rain and usually everything is brown.

Back in May of '00, lightning hit a pine tree in my backyard at 2am. Sounded like a 500lb bomb went off in the backyard. I had just gotten to sleep, and sat straight up in the bed. Took me about 5 minutes to get my shit together to try and go back to sleep.

Just as I'm about to drift back off to lala land, probably about 15-20 minutes after the lightning hit, my doorbell rings. I'm thinking to myself, who the fuck is ringing my doorbell at 2:30ish in the freaking am. I get up and get my damn clothes on, head towards the front door, I look out the back window in the kitchen, and notice an orange glow.

The whole window is orange. I start to get a little freaked out. Meanwhile the doorbell keeps ringing and ringing and ringing, so I start to get a little scared as to what the hell is going on. I'm thinking my damn house is on fire. I finally yell out towards the front door, in a quivering voice, Who's there?

Well, as it turns out, it's my neighbor, he was ringing my doorbell, trying to alert me that his storage shed was on fire, and that he was afraid that it was going to catch the rest of the pine trees in my yard on fire, and possibly burn down my house.

I think his ringing the doorbell scared the fuck out of me, 10,000x more, than the lightning that actually hit the freaking tree.

So we stand out in my backyard watching his storage shed go up in flames. Fire department comes of course, and to our surprise, they find a 20lb propane tank that was in his shed, while putting out said fire. It must have been empty (thank God) for as long as the fire burned, otherwise, it would have blown half of my house, and blown our asses sky high.

I think that's the most scared I've ever been in my life. Still get freaked out by lightning to this day. PTSD I'd call it.
