Hello, All - I'm hoping to get some specific recommendations on what the best ram and graphics card options would be for an upgrade to a computer that has an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe mobo. I'm basically interested in maxing out the board's capabilities w/regard to ram and graphics, and want to make sure I don't run into any compatibility issues. Would any of you be able to recommend a specific model of 1gb ram sticks that would work, as well as a compatible graphics card (either 256 or 512 if the board can take it).

I know just enough about this stuff to really cause myself problems, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. If it's important, I'm runnning a 2.8ghz processor.

Thanks again,

Finstock

what RAM / GPU do you have in there atm?

With a P4 @ 2.8GHz it doesn't really make sense to upgrade.

currently just have 1gb of kingston pc3200 ddr ram and a 128mb card. I appreciate that it might be a bit silly to upgrade instead of buying a new computer, but it's a custom rig a friend built for me a few years ago with a sweet coolermaster case, etc., and I'm looking to squeeze a bit more out of it for a while longer.

Thanks again.

A "sweet CoolerMaster case" doesn't justify having a shit computer in it. If it matters that much, just re-use the case.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

This to be honest.

But if you're set on just the ram/graphics, post what you have just now, so we can get a better idea of what would be an upgrade.

Also, a budget is nice to know.

EDIT: Just missed your post.

Do you know more about the graphics card? If not go Start > Run > type "dxdiag" without quotes and click the display tab.

the guts are listed below. as far as cost is concerned, I have a pretty flexible budget. Just really looking for decent ram and a card that will maximize what the rest of the machine can handle. All I really know is that the mobo caps out at 4 gigs of ram.

Thanks again.

Your machine can't handle much more without bottlenecking. Just get a new system.

what is the absolute max of this flexible budget? if its high enough you can get brand new stuff that totally obliterates that machine for low cost.

This.

My system was £270, and it can run Crysis on High.

You could spend around £100 getting new RAM and Graphics card, or you could spend £300 on a whole new system that will be five or six times better than your old one, and will do you for another three to four years.

Everything highlighted needs replacing.

The mobo is AGP - good luck even finding an AGP card (actually you can still get hold of them, but the range of choices ain't great).

P4's are nice, but old.

Likewise with the other components.

If you bought it when those components were fairly new, it was a nice machine at the time, but as others have implied, tech has come on a long way since then and got a lot cheaper.

Time to upgrade, I'm afraid.

You might be able to re-use the PSU, but if you've had the same one since the machine was built you would be wise to upgrade that too.

Let us know how much you're willing to spend.

Oh and exactly what case have you got (hopefully you'll be able to re-use that too).

EnLight isn't a very good brand. I'm amazed it's held up for this long.

It's not a brand I know - hence "might".
