I think it was just to commemorate their first episode in HD. I for one would be outraged if this is permanent.

I'm pretty sure it was as well.

I doubt they changed the original one.

And even if they did, it's not like it was that drastic of a change. Plus, lol @ Otto.

There's always been several versions of the opening, that's the longest one they're showing.

Like sometimes it would just show Homer almost getting hit, then the couch gag. Other times it would just show Bart's chalk-board gag, and then homer getting hit then the couch gag. The segments of the opening don't always all appear together.

Also this one had a really long couch-gag.

It wasn't all that different from the original, and it was too long to be permanent.  I bet it will be back to the same old intro next episode.

They use longer intro's to make up for time when the show runs short. They do it all the time. No it isn't permanent its just a little fun thing to do. Remember the whole dance intro a long time ago that was 1:30 sec or so long?

I don't really like the Simpsons anymore. They were dead to me when I saw the episode where they reset their timeline so that Marge and Homer were growing up in the 90's and didn't have kids till 2000ish. It's like completely negating all the episodes that came before it. I understand that it makes the ages seem correct without aging the characters, but I like it more in Family Guy were they just make fun of it rather than make up for it.

They actually did that?

What the fuck. Wow.

That, along with the Simpsons Ride taking over the Back to the Future ride in Universal Studios has just made me hate them a little bit more.

Shit.

They should have stopped the Simpsons and focused on Futurama.

The Simpsons has long since given up on what is chronilogically correct. Getting pissy over that 90s episode doesn't change the fact that although Bart was 10 in 1987 whe the series started, (Tracy Ullman Show,) and has since had at least one birthday, (that one where he falls down the well,) yet now in 2009 he is still 10 why the Hell is the 90s episode such a big deal?

That being said I do think that the Simpsons is past it, (Hell, I still like it though.) More energy should have been put into Futurama and I hope after this "fifth season" of straight-to-DVD movies is over the series will actually re-start in earnest.

As to the opening, they re-did the opening after the movie too to show some new characters, (Spiderpig, Boob-lady, Russ Cargill,) as wll as the rebuilding of the town.

I thought that 90's episode was a great one.  I dont really care if they feel the need to reset the timeline, it just means they can make fun of a certain period easier.  The new intro is pretty cool i think too, nothing wrong with a bit of rehashing, and besides, the premise is still the same.

The problem with The Simpsons is they are focusing more and more on low-brow slapstick comedy a la Family Guy (which has also been degrading in quality). The Simpsons used to require a bit of a brain to understand some of the jokes and references to pop culture and politics. Now it's just "LOL HOMER GET HURt, ME LAUGH."

I do appreciate them starting to do them in HD though. Also, has anyone else noticed that they've been remastering old shows? I turned on the TV last night and to my surprise they were showing Seinfeld in HD.
