Those Pentagon heads have been playing too much Star Wars Republic Commando again, because now they want to give soldiers Electro-Magnetic Pulse grenades, according to the head of the new US Army's Electronic Warfare Division:

The Army needs to have its own on-the-ground assets to complement our abilities, to get the enemy first or stop them from getting us on the ground.Electronic warfare is going to be fought on the ground, not just in the air, and you have to have an attack from the ground point of view.

I guess the Taliban iPhones need to be jammed too.

Or we could just detonate a nuke in the air above the Afghanistan/Pakistan border...that'd work well too.

Duh, the circuitry on bombs is electronic, no? EMP kicks the arse of everything.

Aside from the batteries in their technical and the SAMs that Reagan and Carter sold them, does the Taliban have any electronics whose neutralization warrants however much these cost?

Given the current economic climate, I'd say these are a bit of an insurance plan. Not for insurgents/guerilla fighters but rather for use against a conventional army.

Not sure how much electronics there are in today's tanks but I think a emp nade would probably fuck one over pretty bad.

Yep, an EMP is exactly what the name implies. A magnetic pulse, it's not electricity. It fries electrics by causing them to jump, short out and burn.

That'd work well in fucking up everything in the area, not just Bin Laden's 360, the whole point of the "grenade" EMP is to have it only working in a small area

Saying that, the whole EMP thing is dodgy. It doesn't distinguish between friendly and enemy electronics you know, it just fucks up everything. Unless all your shit has electromagnetic shielding/Faraday cages and all that shit, and theirs doesn't, otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot too

But an ordinary grenade that goes of 2 inches from your chest kills you, so it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Except as you said, the range issue.

You know a normal fragmentation grenade doesn't distinguish between friend and foe either, but they seem to have developed a place on the battlefield.

I think what Mek is getting at is the range of the pulse, if it's further than you can throw the grenade it won't really work to your advantage.

Normal fragmentation granade is a tad more local than the atom bomb tbh

But you could argue that it's probably easier to shield yourself from a normal grenade that you've thrown than it would be for something like this

isn't the idea to mess up any remote detonators on roadside bombs?  most are triggered with cell phones, which an emp would fry, which would make bomb disposal easier...

In which case I'd think better wording would have been picked.

Like portable EMP generator or something.
