Mk, not now. But in the future.

Me, Cammy and Jay are looking to chip in to get a nice filesharer/server thing to free up our own computers..

What we were thinking was salvage the 2.4Ghz P4 out of Cammy's current computer, his Raedon crappy piece of shit graphics card, and the case if need be. (although I do want that cube thing that someone bought on the what tech did you buy today thread).

Then buy an Intel mobo compatible with Sata and P4 (if they exist, hur duur), 2x1TB F1 in Raid 1, 2GB DDR2, slap in an old DVD drive I've got sitting here, put Linux on it, and away we go.

Just take his whole computer and a cheap SATA RAID card for £5 on eBay.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Your life will be a lot easier if you don't use Linux.

Also, if your RAID 1 is for backup, don't use RAID 1.

What is this?

Will 1GB of 333Mhz do for a server? I thought you guys woulda slaughtered me for saying I would use his P4 ^^.

Regarding Linux, I think I can crack it, and if I can't, I can google, then ask Sydney, then ask my friend who is uber l33t with linux.

I have 512MB SDRAM in my server, coupled with a P3. RAM usage is pretty much never over 90MB, and CPU usage at 0%. Only high-performance web servers and such need fancy hardware.

Linux uses a whole different file system than Windows, so writing files between the two isn't 100% yet. Although it works and can be done, there isn't any advantage to using Linux here over Windows.

And yes, that P4 will work just dandy for a server. I'm using a PIII 900Mhz with 512MB PC133 RAM for my web server and it is more than adequate.

Take a guess.

And CrazeD, for network shares/FTP/etc, file systems don't matter. Linux is much better for servers, really. Windows is just not made for it.

Enables the crappy motherboard to use Sata HDDs with RAID?

I might just put W7 on it instead of Linux, then.

I agree fully, however I don't classify his doings as a "server". Technically, sure, it is...however you will see no problems whatsoever with using Windows. If you want the extra hassle then use Linux. I have nothing against Linux, just saying, you will probably find Windows easier.

Paying for Linux just seems wrong. Better to go with it's free brother - Fedora
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

True. My only point is that it makes a beast server, not that it's best for a network filedump.

No argument there. Red Hat is an awesome Server OS
