What're the boards with the bit they click down for?
My best gusss would be for editing purposes, so the editor can see which clip it is without having to watch it..

Great movie. I think I actually preffered Hot Fuzz though. Love those guys.

You can clearly see when the slap happens, and can clearly hear when it happens on the audio.
Of course, with modern recording technology, it's really just used to mark video segments (if it's held upside down, it marks the segment you just watched, as a tail marker)
