Feb. 20, 2009Dell has announced a netbook sporting both a 10-inch display and an HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output. Available soon with Ubuntu 8.04, the Inspiron Mini 10 includes a 1.3GHz Atom Z520 or 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, 1.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth, and optional, integrated ATSC tuner.
The Inspiron Mini 10 will ship next month for prices starting at approximately $400, according to Dell.

cool. ill look more in to that
It may have been Nvidia, IIRC, but whoever it was released a chip that does HD decoding direct through the chip. That makes it use less system resources and should end up meaning that it could be on a netbook.
At the moment, though, there is no netbook on the market with HDMI. And I will believe it when I see it with the Dell Mini 10 having an HDMI port and it actually being able to output it without it shitting itself.

If you are going to do it on an Atom Z-series processor: hell no. The N-series could probably pull it off, the question is only "how well". But then you have the video processors and they are pretty pathetic on the netbooks. As I said in my first post, I think NVidia came up with a chip that puts it out that reduces the stress on the machine itself, but I can't remember ...
EDIT: OK, it was Fujitsu and it wasn't meant for netbooks (just look at the cost of the chip): http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/21/fuji … orlds-fir/

oh well. so much for that idea
Honestly dude, it's not really worth it. Pretty much anything worth outputting video to has a VGA port nowadays, anyway.
The only thing that would be nice is having an S-video out or netbooks supporting TV-out natively, then you just need a VGA to RCA adapter and no stupid converter box in between.

I use VGA to TV and HDMI to PS3CapnNismo wrote:

if you have a decent laptop now why get another?
i fail at saving money thats why. i could keep one constantly downloading and streaming media to my tv while im surfing the web on the other one. once i get setup in my apartment in a month or 2, ill check back in to this to see what exactly i need for my place
wait for some new stuff to come out before you buy something you dont need
