i checked newegg and i kinda lol'd at their selection. They got a totol of like, 10 players?

i did see this one, and thought it was pretty cool:



It's like, $140-200 online.

this is how it looks in a car, i kinda thought, meh though...

I'm thinking that shit's pretty standard.

The slot is double size (full size), but I'd be losing access to all onboard settings (Language, MPG - L/100km, etc.) and my steering wheel audio controls would be useless. besides, it would look ugly.

Older cars are pretty much plug and play with non-stock stereos.

You can keep your steering wheel controls mate, you just need to buy the correct adapter, but it will be moderately expensive because you need a Can-Bus interface adapter, somewhere around £60. Facia adapters are also widely available but you must be careful on specifying your dash colour to get a perfect match, but once you have matched the adapter kits look ace!

If you ever really look into changing out that Opel POS radio, just PM me and i can list you all the part numbers you need etc...

There are a handful of vehicles you can absolutely not change the radio in, but there are impressive solutions to bring top end audio and connectivity to these vehicles.

I might take you up on that. Then again, I'm probably changing cars before I go investing in this one.

You wouldn't know if there are any reasonably priced subs available for the Astra? I'm not talking about space consuming sub-boxes and huge amps, but more just boosting lows and looking like it's factory installed, taking up virtually no space.

P.S: What's the deal with the shitty Opel mp3-player not supporting open session discs or WMA? Also, I'm slightly pissed off that it takes ages for it to start playing any mp3 over 192kbps.

No, I would spend $500 if it was a GPS, CD/DVD player. I wouldn't spent up to $500 if it was JUST a cd player. To answer your other question, I would prefer sound quality over features. But, isn't sound quality related to the cd players feature set? As well as the speakers, which are stock also...

I don't want to spend $$ on speakers now, but maybe later.

Ya, the JVC model I posted, is an XG-500. The XG-700 version has a usb port which sparked my interest a little.

No, SQ depends on the composition of the components used in building the set. I.e. DACs used etc...and however the in built EQ has been tuned. You will find makes such as Sony will have quite a bland unimaginitive sound, Pioneer is very vibrant on the majority of its units whereas Alpine tends to come out the clearest, less tampered with EQ.

I can't suggest Alpine enough for SQ, especially anything that will Imprint. Also, if you can find one at a good price: Pioneer DEH-P88RS (or the new RSII version). I personally use the DEH-P88RS, i passed up an Alpine CDA-9887 (which has Imprint built in) for the sheer love of the P88RS. The P88RS uses Burr Brown DACs (Digital to Analogue converters), so reproduction of sound from the CD deck is amazing.

Also if you are looking for SQ, compressed music negates any effort you make towards achieving great SQ.
