2.4ghz wireless router and 5.8ghz cordless phone

anyone heard of interference between a 2.4ghz wireless router, and a 5.8ghz cordless phone?

I got DSL installed yesterday, and I got a Netgear WGR614 wireless for my laptop. Everything's working fine, tonight I get a call, I go to look at the caller id, all it shows "ringing". So my first thought is that the router and cordless phone are at the same frequency. Well to my surprise, the cordless phone is 5.8ghz.

Does anyone know if the filters that came with my DSL modem could be the problem?

There's one jack in the house that has only a caller id box connected to it, no phone. Don't ask why, cause I don't know But it works as it should.

Where the DSL line is connected, I of course connected the split filter, DSL line to modem, other line to phone, but there's no caller id box hooked to that phone. Phone works fine.

And then the cordless phone, it also has the DSL filter inline, the phone works fine, just not the caller id.

BTW, cordless phone is AT&T model E512B, if that matters. I've googled and only see references to 2.4 and 2.4. Also I just changed my router over to "G" only, but still no caller id. I'm kinda confused as to why all the sudden caller id quit on the cordless.

Any ideas? Suggestions, concerns?

Yeah, I only got DSL yesterday, got everything connected etc. I didn't receive any calls last night to be able to check it.

Well, have you called your phone company to get number presentation enabled? That shit isn't usually free.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Have you tried removing the caller ID box? the phone probably has that function integrated. Or did it work just fine before you got the DSL?

LOL, I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. My allergies have been giving me hell tonight, don't feel that great.

Anyway, yeah, the cordless phone has caller id built in, it did work before I got DSL. Not that I'm blaming DSL for the caller id not working. I don't know if it's just coincidence, or what.

The caller id box in another room works fine, although it doesn't have a phone hooked to it.

I'll check back tomorrow for other replies. Benedryl is kicking in, can't fight it anymore.

I'll google the problem again tomorrow, and see if can dig up anything other than the 2.4/2.4 problems that others have had.

Maybe it is just a coincidence?

Wireless routers DO interfere with other wireless devices vice-versa. I've tested this. Although I cant give you exact reasons, Im just saying there is interference. When my router is off there is no interference with my phone or CB radio (work), when the router is on I get all sorts of static.

It's all up to the devices. Things with similar frequency are more prone to cause problems. Having a 2.4GHz mouse and a 2.4GHz WLAN router is probably gonna cause trouble. However, a 1800MHz phone and a 2.4GHz WLAN router are very unlikely. Same for the OP.

The problem today is that many frequency ranges are reserved or otherwise illegal, making the free bands few and far between. ~27MHz is one, ~2.4GHz is another, and 5-6GHz is pretty free. With many, many wireless devices around, some might end up on the same channel, usually resulting in the weaker one just ceasing to work. A 50mW 802.11a 5GHz router will probably more or less kill off a 1-3mW 5GHz phone like the one in the OP.

Same phone company for DSL and phone service.

Nothing else seems to be wrong with the phone line, etc.

That's what I initially thought Freezer, with the 5.4ghz cordless phone, and the 2.4ghz router, there shouldn't be any interference. But I noticed today that it still doesn't show caller id.

I'm going to turn off the router and see if the caller id will work again. It probably will, that would be my luck, and I guess if it does, I can drag out a spare caller id box, and connect it to that phone. But that kind of defeats the purpose of having the caller id on the cordless. Modern technology!!

Edit: I unplugged the router, called the house from my cell, still not showing caller id.

Edit # 2 Just solved my problem. Dummy me plugged the filter they sent with my modem, into the input on the back of the phone, instead of plugging the filter into the wall jack. Problem solved.

I should have known it was something stupid that I did, and it was.
