I have not even hit my 20s yet, and I have already resolved not to get cable when I have my own place. I plan to seriously limit my TV intake, maybe just own a TV and an antennae for emergencies. As it is, I only watch 2.5 hours a week, and even that is needless. There is no substance to in television anymore. There is just too much to do to let yourself waste hours a week watching TV! Learn a instrument, read a book, learn a new skill. Get another job. I've always noticed that the most interesting people do not own televisions. The best way I've heard it described as is a pacifier. It's like a pacifier for adults. It's a convenient waste of time that gets you nowhere. Ok, there are educational shows that can be interesting, but at what price? Hours, days, months of your life wasted watching commercials and channel surfing. Now, if my kid had an internet addiction at that age, I would seriously limit it and try to replace it with something else. You have to do it VERY gradually and replace it with something just as good, or better, or he will waste his youth sitting around in front of a pc. There's plenty of time for that when you are too old to do anyhting sle, but at his age, that's just sad.ATG wrote:

It is shocking to me that in this age of information so many are so apathetic and the machine can keep feeding disinformation and lies and have it work. ffs, this whole world is evolving so fast. The youth of today have to make an effort to have a real face to face social life because there is so much offered on the internet. Makes it easier to desenitize them, feed them information and make them dependant on that.
My son is no different; he'd rather spend time on lego.com than watch television. Sometimes when I walk in from a hard days work they don't even look up from the screen. We got rid of cable for a while, but our own boredom brought it back. I personally watch maybe one hour of television a week, but my wife does four hours per day. I myself have lost a lot of sleep to video games and probably a lot of money through not being as productive at work. The amount of productivity lost to the internet is huge.
The loss of personal relationships and finding ways to entertain yourself is unimaginable. Imagine the world of one hundred years ago. Our world is better in some ways, but worse in many others.
I miss college.
I miss IM'ing my roommate right behind me that he's a doody head while he's writing a paper at 1 in the morning.

Wow Deadmonkiefart wow......
All im gonna say is that would the world be better without TV or Internet? How would we watch movies, How would we play video games, how would we recieve information about what is going on in the world as quickly as we do, how many businesses that rely on Television and the internet wouldnt exist, how many great television shows that everyone you know likes to watch wouldnt be watched anymore? to all the people that say TV and Internet are a waste.

I rather go with my friends out to have a drink, chat, chill out and have fun than sit in front of pc playing games. It's so much more fun.I try to be consistent in exercising, too.
what does exercising have to do with anything? lmaoblah wrote:

Are you guys trying to turn this into whether or not the Internet is good/bad argument over a message board?

Because I tend not to be a couch potato and get fat,it has to do with everything.I rather get together with friends and exercise than sit in front of computer, play stupid video games or IM and not move at all while eating junk food all the timegnot<3 wrote:

I spend about 10h/d average on the computer.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

They are not a waste. I use the internet as much as anybody, and I occasionally watch television. The problem is, I know a lot of people who don't do anything else, and I know how easy it is to sit in front of the television instead of doing something that requires effort. You don't even get entertainment the entire time. Half of it is spent watching mind-numbing commercials. TV is a waste 90% of the time. It has its uses, but nowadays, anything television can do, the internet can do better. I love the internet and I think it's beautiful. I'm just getting tired of my generation and their obsession with impersonal forms of communication.Roc18 wrote:

Although i'm young (a month off 17) i didn't grow up on the internet. i didn't really use it at all until highschool. i play computer games, but i also play sport (admittedly mostly motorsport but still). i would much rather go to a mates house, have a few drinks and a chat than sit on my computer. personally i think its just all about balance. technology is great, its helpful convenient and fun but i think parents need to raise their kids in a way where they are not always dependent on technology for entertainment. i know its not easy, but my parents managed it and if i have kids i will definitely take a similar approach.
@ ATG, one thing i personally always do is make sure i spend time talking to my family. your kids will probably realise when their old (im assuming their young). but i think its so important to maintain a good, happy and fun family environment. My whole family rides motorbikes together (although mum isn't very good ) and there is only one TV show i watch every week, and its one that our whole family watches, so even through technology we can have a laugh together.
However, in my grade (year 12, which is senior year here) i see people texting friends in the same class about the most trivial stuff. or playing games on their phone. i will never understand it and personally i think those people are very stupid. their parents care enough to pay for an expensive private school education and yet they happily flush it down the toilet to catch up on who's dating who.
I do fear for our generation, but i think there are lots of reasons to be positive for the future as well.
sorry for talking about myself so much, its just the easiest example for me and im not sure if the whole thing makes sense

You make alot of assumptions when you talk about the internet and Television. Stop assuming you dont get entertainment and stop assuming that its an obsession for everyone that uses it and appreciate it for what it is, another way for people to communicate with each other. Its not a replacement for face to face communication and something to avoid like a disease.Deadmonkiefart wrote:
