Weird thing is - I often look up at the stars, and always have (and really miss being able to see the milky way) - but, how come I've never seen venus before this year???

(that was what made me question it - the fact I'd never seen it before)

There are a few varying circumstances that make each planet more prominent. Planets orbit in an elliptical motion.. although I think Venus is probably the closest to circular.

Could it also be higher than usual?

As I think I said in my thread, I've always thought Venus appears close to the horizon and, now, living here in flatland (East Anglia is about as flat as Holland), I was sure it was always too low too see from here.

Hmm... maybe we should move over to my thread with this sub-discussion, as we're getting way off-topic...

(can individual posts be moved?)

It is a bit higher in the summer. It's called the morning "star"/evening "star" because it usually hangs around the horizon.

Well, the one thing I am sure about is that it is definitely not summer here.

AHA! It's really close, and is/was heading towards us... (relatively speaking)

This random thought popped into my head today, and I'm sure it's not original, but it'd still be cool and more interesting. Instead of asking "what are you doing?" the question would be "where are you?", and you'd basically snap a photo with a cell phone and upload it instantly to the site. Text is just so boring, but pictures are worth a thousand words (Not to mention I'd rather "follow" someone to see cool/interesting/funny pics, rather than just read futile, narcissistic text)

Basically sounds as if Tumblr would be your street- very basic blogging service with an emphasis on minimal text and maximum pictures/artwork.

Slyly bumping this to say that a University friend has shown me the light regarding Twitter - if only to use it for a glamorized newsfeed - and I think I shall use it as a status-bump feed in order to link via Facebook/Twitter/other networks whenever I post some of my writing to the Internet. The editor of the student magazine here has clued me into the entire fandango; whenever I post a music review or piece of writing to my Internet blog/archive, I can link it through Facebook and Twitter in realtime. Kinda neat, I suppose... just for when publicizing your own work becomes too much effort in itself . Will work on getting the rather-essential blog/website part running during my summer break when I have oodles of spare time, just waiting on a domain registration now!

Raid it if you want... I don't care much for the 'blogosphere' or any of that Web 2.0 shit. For me it's a practical way to archive all of my student-journalism published articles/reviews- just an online storage space for people to read up on more info / further links / re-read previous entries, etc. I'm definitely not champing at the bit to establish myself as a successful 'blogger' or website owner; I'd be happy enough if a few people that read the University magazine/paper paid it a visit or had a browse after checking my Twitter/Facebook/etc.

As for book recommendations... erm, I'm kneedeep in revision right now so my creative and literary horizons are dismally grey and academic. What sort of stuff are you into? Try Huxley's Brave New World or The Doors of Perception, or perhaps something like Vladimir Nabkov's Lolita. Haven't really had any time at all to (re)read any of my personal favourites or to browse any of my own literary choices recently .
