You've heard plenty of stories about foreclosures, but the latest victims of this brutal recession are about to lose their cave.

That's right. For nearly five years, Curt Sleeper and his family have lived in a cave. His mortgage is about to come due and, like millions of other Americans, he can't refinance.

So now, the 17,000-square-foot, subterranean home is being auctioned off on eBay.

Looks fucking awesome.

I guess he'll have to downsize though. Poor bastard. Having to live in a normal sized house. How unfair.

Lesson in this: Don't buy shit you don't need if you can't afford it.

Once saw an episode of Grand Designs where someone built their house into a hill like a hobbit, and they had this like tube of mirrors down the middle of each room, which filled the room with sunlight. Shit was so cash.

That sounds awesome.

Was watching Grand Designs the other day for some reason (yes we get it here in Aus, along with a few other BBC shows) and they had this pair who spent 300,000 pounds on restoring and overhauling an old mill and holy shit.

Just... Wooooooooow. Place was picture perfect. Down to the 44 inch plasma TV and 6000 pound sound system.

If you have you'd probably remember a shitload of white. The whole place was white. Looked bloody amazing. Can't imagine living there. I'd be freaking out about breaking the shower, which also cost them 6000 pounds.

Wish I had that sort of cash to splash.

That's so fucking cool. That really sucks for that guy, because no matter how much money he'll ever make, it'll be very hard to ever find and build something similar again.

I would assume that if he can afford a house that big, he can afford one of those $300 cell forwarders that they sell. Hell, he can even go the extra $200 and have it put on a 20 foot tall pole outside the house for best reception.

I don't understand the story though, it says that his mortgage is about to end and he can't refinance, so does that mean that getting a new mortgage would cost too much in interest... or...?

They can't afford the interest so needs to refinance, but the value of the house has fallen so much the new loan wont be able to cover the old one.

Or they lost their job so has no income to get a loan.
