Do you think it would be un-balancing to add radar to the aa sites, just that lights up airplanes? because this was in desert combat and it would be nice to have in bf2, or at least the carriers should get radar, cuz i mean come on, its a freaking air craft carrier.
ya definitly. it seems unlikeley that a SAM site has no radar
I think the big green boxes / red triangles are enough of a "radar".
I guess it depends on how real you want the game. At the moment it IS realistic. The AA "sites" are just heat seeking missiles so don't need radar.
If a carrier (or any major warship) gets close to land, they MUST turn off the air radar's because they put out too much power and would really mess with electronics gear ashore. Which only leaves the surface search radar which is no good for aircraft, especially over land.
I served on a Guided Missile Destroyer for 6.5 years in case you were wondering!

Can you answer a question for me? How does an aircraft detect a heat seeking missile lock?
Good question Skruples.
Generally, a fully passive system (IR/EO - Infra Red - Electro-Optic) will not be detected by any onboard systems (other than the pilot seeing the launch).
There are some systems that can detect the "Thermal Bloom" (The heat signature of the missile upon launch) but they (from what I have only heard) aren't very effective.
I hope that helps ?
(And yeah, I know it's not realistic in the game)
Edited for typo !!

Yes, it would be very unbalanced, you'd know where every plane is. You'd never get killed because you'd know if something was inbound and going to kill you.
yet again a canberran proves smartest guy in thread!!!VspyVspy wrote:

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I was always confused about how the plane 'knew' it was being locked onto by a heat seeking missile, even before its launched. Personally I think DICE should have gone with radar missiles, or some combination.
I just miss the dogfighting in BF1942 and BFV. Everything's so automated now...Skruples wrote:

first ya all whine about the godliness of the planes
so yall get some nasty AA and now ya want more?
i say do away with the AA and put slingshots in their places.
now that makes as much sense as the OP

Hmm. Give Blackhawks their miniguns back (not the current BB guns) and teach people how to properly use the AT kit. OH! Why didn't anybody think of that?!
Mobil AA needs to have radar. like in DC (JMHO)!
Yeah just for mobile radar because it says in the vehicle section of the walkthrough, "using the most advanced RADAR available..." but yet there is none! WTF is up with that
