I started playing BF2 about 3 weeks ago,, the first two or three days were nice,,,  then an update,,, I get connections failures and unmodified content errors everytime I try an play now,, I might get lucky and make it through a match if it is almost over.  Not a very warm welcome into the BF2 Community. I was bored of AA and sick of the bugs,, but does not seam to be any better on the other side of the fence.

I have a friend that is haveing a similar proble to some of the posts only it's backwards.  He plays on his laptop and it works great wireless.  His wired PC he gets into the server and gets loaded into the game and then it pops the Connection problem message.  He eventually gets kicked.  The PC is 2gig RAM and more power than the laptop.  it worked before but he had to reload and now is having problems. any idea's?  I am going to check with him about having a dual processor.  But if it worked before, stands to reason that it should work after reload.

gaming with a dual processor is a big NO NO, BF2 cant run on a dual processor PC if you wanted to play BF2 on it you would have to shut down one of the dual processors just to play.

I sincerely hope you were joking about that dual proc not working with BF2. I have a dual proc system and its running great.

on the topic of connection problem I lately found out that all my problems were related to Trillian. When I launch trillian it is doing something that makes my BF2 go crazy where I have "connection problem" exactly every 60 seconds in the game... I timed it. (there is no setting in Trillian that indicates what it might be doing every 60 seconds... updating or something)
Even exiting trillian wouldnt solve the problem. If I reboot and dont start trillian then BF2 has no problems.

As a test I installed MSN messenger and it causes no problem with BF2. So not exactly sure what process that Trillian starts that is causing BF2 to misbehave like that.  And it obviously does not exit when I quit out of Trillian.

Game system:

HP X-2100 Workstation
2x36GB SCSI 10K Hard Drives
512MB Rambus RAM
ATI Raedon 9800 Pro
Cable Modem connection (5Mbs / 384k)
Windows 2003 Server with everything turned off.

Guys, I am at my wits end with this game. Maybe there is something I am missing. Before all of the problems started, I was playing the game fine. It would frezze up once in awhile, but I had a ATI 9250 so it really wasn't made to play the game. When the previous update made this card useless, I bought a ATI 9800 PRO thinking my problems would go away. Well, the choppy video went away but now I get "There is a problem with your connection" and my ping goes over 1000. I NEVER had this problem before and up until recently I never got kicked from a server due to band pings.

I checked search here and made sure everything was done. Here is what I did:

1) Changed connection type from T1 to Cable Modem
2) Changed the EXE file name
3) Downloaded the latest ATI drivers
4) Did the punkbuster stuff, as detailed on this thread
5) Deleted files in the My Documents
6) Tried diffrent network designs (other switches, ports, whatever)

I run a Linksys router and a Nortel Baystack 450T 10/100 switch. I have a cross over cable going from the Linksys to the Nortel. Would it be worth a try to put the game machine on a DMZ?

Does anyone have any other ideas? I think I have tried them all.

Thanks!

Have you tried disabling VOIP and EAX ingame? This seems to work for a lot of people.

We got it fixed, As he played with the system, he ended up uninstalling the AV and SW software and it fixed the problem.  He would go and close it in the sys tray but it didn't help and then he removed it from startup.  Apparently there was a something it was doing connection wise even thought it was all shut down.  Definatly a plug for having just a gameing machine that runs lean and mean.

Where do you do that?

The poster above me might have the right idea. I may just reload everything and start over with just having games installed and nothing else. I have enough PCs to make up a general use PC, so if that doesn't work I may try that.

Well, I have reloaded my PC with WINXP and BF2 is working perfectly. I have no other programs on it right now, just BF2 and Microsoft Windows updates. No anti-virus, no office, no ICQ, not one thing that is not gaming related. I have another system to internet surf and do my home office work on.

I just wanted to put that out there in case someone wanted to try it.

See you guys in honorable battle! May the gates of Stovacore swing wide for the honorable warriors!

I catch that message EVERY night from 7:45-8. I think its cause I am located in a rural area and every wanker and thier brother gets on around 8 o clock. So i will get the error log in and my map will be full. I THINK its from 400 people joining a map. And they cant take the Server Full message. They keep clicking and clicking cause they gotta have the Cobra on that map to whore in.

Rant over.

Tired of Problem with Connection also.

I've found Single player to be very satisfying on the Vet level for that half hour or so.

found a new solution that completely cured my "lost connection" problem. This was the one that was absolutely the real cause

type this on the cmd line (you can even put it in a .bat file)

net stop wzcsvc

this is "Wireless Zero Configuration" service. For some reason if your wireless connection was not setup correctly then windows will look for other wireless nodes every 60 seconds!!!!

i to have experienced this problem.  i think it is a combination of problems from pb, ea, dice, your machine and isp.  i did a trace route and found one of my isp's routers was dropping packets like mad.  being a gamer i complained for a long time, but they really didn't care, so i upgraded my service from 6Mb/s down / 512Kb/s up to 9Mb/s down / 1Mb/s up and noticed that i was then routed differently than when i was on the 6Mb/s setup.  i left it like this for about 2wks.  when i switched back i was still going through the same routers that i was when i was on the 9Mb/s setup, so maybe this helped, not entirely sure.

i also did the following:
1. I uninstalled the entire game with the exception of the profiles
2. I ran chkdsk, JV16 and NTREGOPT, the latter being programs that clean and optimize the registry
3. I upgraded my ATI drivers to the current Catalyst 6.3s
4. I re-installed the entire game using the large, entire patch - 1.0->1.21 along with the Euro Forces Booster Pack
5. I re-defragged all of my hard drives. I do this weekly, but thought what the hell

i am now pretty much playng lag free, but have decided to try this pb_sleep command as it makes sense to me that it will work, and i definately have the cfg file generated that shows the pb_writecfg command did indeed change the sleep time from 20->500.

also, some people were referring to the time being in seconds, but it is in milliseconds so the default setting of 20ms means that it will process it cycles 50x a second, but with it converted to 500ms, it will only do it 2x a second.  honestly i have no idea what pb would be doing 50x a second but imo that is ridiculous.

lastly, bf2 definately has no issues running on dual core machines, it may not be coded to take advantage of the second core, but it will run excellent on a dual core.  also as more dual core rigs are created the gpu drivers are starting to take effect of the dual cores better, so things will just get better as it all matures.  i have read where some people will need the amd x2 driver or the xp hotfix, but that is about all the trouble i have really read/heard about.  personally i run a single core rig (opteron 144 @ 2.5GHz) but a couple of friends i game with regularily run a 3800x2 and the other a 4400x2 with no issues.
