Fortunate to look younger than 25? Please don't be offended if we ask you for ID
Which is basically saying that unless you look like an adult (25+) you will be ID'd.

Restaurants are the most lenient. Most will turn a blind eye if at least a few people round the table have sufficient ID. Or at least won't question the fact that you're buying alcohol for other people.

If I got in to a supermarket (ASDA) with a friend and only one of us is buying alcohol, they won't let me/him purchase it unless both of us have ID. Annoying, to say the least.
25?

Isn't it 21
Nope, its 25.

Though to be fair most places are only really bothered when it comes to the bar itself, i just get friends (referred to as "Beer monkeys" to get me alchohol, I then leave it for about 2 minutes then drink it myself.

I've only ever had one drink taken away from me due to lack of age, that was annoying as fuck though. I was half way through a pint and the manager of the establishment comes up and asks me for id... I just said i'd forgotten it and he walked off with my pint leaving me feeling quite stunned and grieving for my pint.

No matter, i'm 18 on sunday so the current age requirement doesn't really bother me.

I was just stunned and as he was the manager I couldn't do anything about it except sit there, with a gradually warming hand .

EDIT: Needless to say I'm now boycotting that establishment.

3 friends and I had to pour out 2 30 packs when we got caught by ATF.  Not only did it suck to get caught, but we had just got there and only had a few each and pouring out all that beer took like 20 minutes.

That reminds me of a scene from Entourage. Turtle had just gotten some really good stuff and was pulled over. The cop smelled it, told him to put the bottle (since it was in a prescription bottle) in the sewer. He does it and the cop drives away. He goes back to the sewer with Drama and Drama sees he put it on a ledge. Brilliance.

Think how different University culture would be. This makes me shudder. Our student's union wouldn't really have any income at all, lol.

Music festivals?

Getting drunk after A-level and/or any exam results?

18th birthday parties would be somewhat different.

Under-age drinking would increase a lot, me thinks.

I fail to see how it wouldn't change anything.
Because 99.9% of teenagers and people under 21 don't follow it. It's completely ignored. Even if you do get caught by the cops, very little will happen to you. Not to mention it's incredibly easy to fake an ID over here.
Hmm, it's hard to fake an ID here, and if a club/bar gets caught serving to underage people (under 18) they get arseraped by the law. Can lose their liquor license, and get fined a shitload. For them it's not worth it, so age of service is strictly enforced.

I couldn't imagine if the age were 21 and not 18. We'd kill the politicians who voted for the bill, tbh.

Something needs to be done although putting up the drinking age would be stupid. Imo the drinking culture here is terrible to the extent where I've seen pretty shocking things. At this uni it's normal for people to end up in a A & E atleast twice a term. I say tax the shit out of it like they do in Norway and make sure people can't afford to drink everyday.

Exactly...before I moved here I didn't really understand why so many Brits were overweight but now it's blatantly obvious. People drink ALL the time from lunch until the early hours of the morn. I don't mind having a pint a day for dinner but here it's normal to have atleast 3 pints with your lunch, a further 3 pints for dinner and then more after that.

Exeter must be a bunch of alcoholics or something ...

I think you're generalizing.

I only know two people that have ended up in A&E after drinking since being here - having fallen over when drunk and cracked their head on something for example, as opposed to being there to have their stomach pumped, or something like that.

I've never seen anyone have 3 pints at lunch time and certainly not followed by 3 more at dinner. There may be a few exceptions, but 6 pints a day at meal times is certainly not the norm.

I either only drink one beer, or similar, with my meal on occasions.

I only get drunk if I'm going out - and I don't always get completely off my tits.

Exeter has an insane drinking culture partly because everyone who goes here can afford to go out more than 4 times a week. Also the rugby LAD culture influences how much people drink.

I've seen plenty of people drink that much at lunch followed by dinner bearing in mind that I can speak from experience after living here for 7 years. (I'm not just silly Norwegian who thinks he knows it all )

Compare the English drinking culture to places like Norway or even France and you'll definitely notice a difference. In Norway people will generally only drink during the weekends even during dinner. One might think that in France the drinking culture is terrible because they start from such an early age but I think this is more sensible because people actually learn how to drink alcohol, i.e., not in such large quantities and they learn how to enjoy it. I go out to town whether it be in Exeter, Bath, Bristol or somewhere around here and I see multiple people completely pissed by 16:00.

Tax it and put an age requirement on spirits at 20=problem solved although this would completely unimaginable on a country that is completely reliant to alcohol.

O btw..I'm not trying to insult anyone here. I just feel I can speak from experience considering I've lived in multiple places during my lifetime and can compare.

The problem can't be solved with taxes and laws, it's a culture problem that really I have no idea how it's gonna be fixed. Maybe this recession will sort some people out but it'll do the opposite if anything...!

I find it hard to believe that Exeter's drinking culture is much different to any other university's drinking culture. The fees are pretty much the same for most universities. And it's not like Exeter has London-style drink/bar/club/etc/food prices.

It's true that the rugby teams drink more. But that's what I meant by "exceptions".

Surg is right... There are a lot of very wealthy kids who go here so they can afford to drink. The drinking culture here is more insane than any other uni I have visited which imo sucks because unfortunately I've been dragged into it. Kids who've just come out of boarding school finally have the opportunity to do what they want and believe me they go all out. In fact I know for a fact that Exeter has a reputation for it's drinking culture so, believe me, it's not that hard to believe.

And it's not like Exeter has London-style drink/bar/club/etc/food prices.
... Exeter is cheaper than London so obviously people will be able to go out more and drink more.

It's true that the rugby teams drink more. But that's what I meant by "exceptions".
The fact that almost the whole uni is very sports orientated also influences the drinking culture with the 3 times- a week savage socials.

This.

I usually go out drinking once a week with my group of friends. And even then, I really just drink enough to stay a little bit more than tipsy - cause that's where it's the most fun. Wtf is the point in drinking so much you can't remember the night? o.O

OK Mr. Teddy, I believe you.

Yeah, very true. Though they have introduced an "AU Night" here (Athletic Union) where all the clubs are supposed to hold their drinking socials. Works reasonably well and contains the drinking to one night. Though obviously clubs hold socials on other nights too ...
