I'm going to the SXSW music festival in Austin this year, preferring to attend free/cheap shows. I don't know which ones are free or paid, so I need to keep some options open.

This is the list of bands at each respective location

The only band that I recognized in a quick sweep through the Wednesday list is The Egg. Basically, if you have heard of any of these bands/seen them/have opinions, I'd like to hear them. I know it's a long list, and even then that's only Wednesday. I hope to be going for each day, so if you have some free time, or love for music, or love for me (<33), please take some time and look at these lists.

There's a search function here if you know any rock/punk/hiphop/dj/electronica bands, or some less known bands that you enjoy listening to. I'd like to go to some of the earlier shows (transportation reasons), but may make accommodations for later shows if the bands are epic.

Unfortunately no. Not a fan of bluegrass or country. Rock, Punk, Hiphop/R+B/rap, electronica etc are all fine though

If all else fails, I'd just go to Stubbs.  That place is cool as shit and I'm sure it will attract some good bands.

I'm sure Stubbs will be awesome, but I'm pretty sure big places like Stubbs will also be paid/pass only. And passes are expensive to fuck (talking $500+), so we might have to be a bit more... "active" in our pursuit of good music. I'm still not positive on what the whole pass/free thing entails, so we'll see I suppose.

@ig: I didn't mean to, those were the only two genres I noticed while browsing that I don't care for.

Seconded.

Can't stand country music due to upbringing. Will happily listen to the odd bit of bluegrass.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Wow, I don't know why this didn't cross my mind earlier (I guess I thought SXSW was later in the year) but I'm actually going to be in town for the Friday and maybe Saturday shows for my friends birthday and apparently, that's where he had planned on celebrating.  He lives in Austin and knows more of these bars and bands than I do, so if he tells me of anyone good I'll be sure to pass it on.

I didn't get very far on that list though.  Too many venues, too many bands.

Cheers.

ACL is the one that's in September/October, SXSW is usually around spring break afaik.

I noticed Brother Ali on that list.  I'm a big fan of his, and he's awesome live.  If you like a bit of quality hip-hop check him out.
