Buying A New Monitor - Which Is Best For BF2?

Hi,

My old Viewsonic 'VX924 Xtreme Gaming' 19" 4:3 LCD broke this morning, so Im thinking which new monitor to get...

The only game I play is BF2 so should I try and find another 4:3 monitor since BF2 doesnt properly support wide resolutions, or just go for a widescreen monitor? If so what sort of size - Im thinking maybe 22"?

Are there any monitors out there that are specifically aimed at gamers? Obviously response time is crucial, but how important are other factors like Contrast Ratio, Brightness, Refresh Rate, Colours etc for gaming?

Finally, anyone who does use a widescreen for BF2, does it take long to get used to the stretched display?

you can force bf2 run on widecreen. I'm running at my native resolution 1680x1050

Cool - how do you do that? Is it by editing the BF2 shortcut? It still looks stretched though doesnt it?

Get the first Samsung monitor that fits your budget.

That's how it is with most things these days, really. The first Samsung that fits.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Widescreen BF2 isn't very different, you'll get use to instantly. Actually, I like it a lot better, because you can see more around yourself.

I'd suggest looking at your local tech shop or Overclockers for a 22" or 24" Samsung or LG. 8800GTS is still a nice card, so you shouldn't run into any problems.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

After reading various reviews this afternoon I think the LG W2284F 22" Widescreen might be best suited. Digital Contrast Ratio of 30000:1, 2ms Response Time, Brightness of 300 cd/m2, 1680x1050 Resolution. Additionally has a unique feature that it can adjust to 4:3 ratios e.g. 1280x1024 then just has black borders on the sides, which is kinda cool if I dont like playing BF2 stretched.

That aspect ratio feature is hardly unique. That contrast ratio is also a lie.

really? mine says 8000:1 and my parents tv is apparently 1, 000,000:1

Because those are BS figures. Different manufacturers test in different ways, most of which are very shady.

wow thats bs oh well I got my monitor for 130$ and my parents got the 50" on a sickk deal as well normally like 1 grand they got it for 750$ lol

Cool thanks Freezer. Saved me from buying the LG unnecessarily - think I might go for the Samsung T220 instead - its cheaper, has the same specs and gets good reviews. +1 Karma for your help
