I have seen people shoot in an ark when their D-Loop breaks on draw sometimes, but even then its not very high and (depending on the slope) only goes 30 metres past the target or in a tree.
I find it very hard to believe they accidentally shot it in the air. If you knew anything about safety it shouldn't be pointing anywhere in the air for it to come down on a steep angle.
Only other explanation I can of is someone trying to draw a bow set to a too high a poundage for them, they usually tend to lift their arm high and wrench the bowstring back. That could be plausible, but still fucking stupid.
