Nvidia will do x86 when it makes sense

Last week we asked Nvidia representatives what the official company stand is on its x86 CPU project and we got a simple answer - Nvidia might do this if they realize that it makes sense.

Even if Nvidia is doing something about it, they won't rat it until they have something real. Even if something is going on at this time, most people, including some senior personnel, wouldn’t even know about it.

Since Nvidia is happy with its Tegra platform and its opportunities to bring a device that can run many multimedia things on an iPhone format device, they are starting to look in that direction. The Tegra is powered by an ARM CPU, meaning Nvidia could bring its CPU and actually give Intel and AMD something to fight against.

All in all, we believe that it will just be a case similar to Intel’s graphics codenamed Larrabee project, and it will be tough for Nvidia to shine with its CPU project. After all, Nvidia’s first GPU, the NV1, was a complete failure, while NV5 was much better. These things takes time but Nvidia has proven before that it can be done.
nVidia wat srsly

ROFL... that makes no sense to me! Intel sits on top of the patent mountain and will make sure such product will NEVER come to light or if it does nVIDIA will be in deep lawsuit trouble...

AMD make x86 CPUs.

Oh.

I don't get it.  How can only Intel have the right to make x86 CPUs?  That's like saying "Bob discovered apples before anyone else, so now Bob is the only person in the world who can grow and sell them."

So if you invented cold fusion, you wouldn't mind if I stole your tech?

They don't have the sole right to said product type. But, they do have the right not do be directly copied; or rather directly stolen from. x86 CPUs are CISC processors--the pins produce a specific set of signals and there is a finite op-code instruction set (Complex-Instruction-Set for this CPU: CISC). Software runs on this hardware coded machine-op-code/pin signal set. If you can engineer a chip that performs the same function, you're not violating any code of ethic or law. That's sort of what AMD did, excepting they almost certainly had access to proprietary chip fabrication techniques as well as technical specifications of the x86 chip architecture developed under Intel (as they had a contract to produce 8086 and 8088 processors in 1982).

And of course corporate espionage is faster than doing/developing (reverse-engineering) a copy from scratch. It's only illegal--in this sense--you got caught directly stealing secrets. Else all is far in love & chip-wars.

Ambient occlusion is actually months old feature introduced in beta driver. 185.65 beta is a new AO driver. It certainly is cool feature that has some noticable image quality changes in games. its still in beta state and needs a lot of work.
