hello peeps, windows media player has suddenly decided to stop working, (Vista 64bit HP). I've tried to downgrade but it won't let me. Anyone know how to fix this? In XP you can just reinstall but with Vista its inbuilt.

I know, I use VLC, but  inexperienced users use this PC and would rage if I made VLC default. /facepalm

you could try this.
Use at own risk though, found it via google:

1.
Go to Start - > Type Run in the Search Box - > type regsvr32 wmp.dll
1.
For more information on what this command does refer to the following article:
2.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249873
3.
This method is quick and all it does is re-register a WMP11 component and it may or may not work for some people
2.
You will need your Vista install DVD in the drive for the program to find the replacement files. Go to to the command prompt (when you boot from the DVD) and run SFC /SCANFILE.

3.
This method takes a while (between 20-30 minutes or less depending on the number of files you have on your computer) but is a lot more thorough and will most probably fix most of the issues you are having with WMP11 as it not only re-registers the components but it also replaces any corrupt ones with files from your VISTA INSTALL DVD.

iTunes for music? Lulz.

Kurazoo : Try running it in Administrator Mode and resetting your settings after you do so. It could be some of your music that is causing the problem ( illegal downloads? bad tagging, then, unless it was from a private tracker. )

Doesn't support FLAC, and ALAC is too hard to come by.

well, you could convert FLAC to ALAC, but iTunes tends to run extra slow when playing ALAC. Though, I agree, comverting is a pain in the ass.

As for iTunes, it's slow, buggy, fails to import decent sized (>20GB) libraries and hogs a lot of resources.

Itunes does support FLAC, though not natively meaning a simple addon is required.
