Hey guys,

Im planning to buy a new rig and would really appreciate if you advice me what would be better to buy and what not. I have DVD mechanics, HDD and monitor with keyboard and mouse, so I need the box. First of all it has to be quite (so maybe some simple cooling), but not huge or big case, something mid. CPU should be Intel (probably 4 core) as I see AMD are quite behind them. GPU of 512Mb, Im not quite sure if there is a reason to get 1Gb. RAM should be DDR3,probably 2 or 4Gb. Motherboard... well depends on you.

Would be great if you write me how much money I should spend on it. Im ready for investment of 800€ but thats not the limit really. Thx

P182, if that's not too big, for the case - even with all the available fan mounts filled, they're whisper quite (if you have all three-speed fans, all set to low, in all mounts, that is).

I think the real question would be, is it primarily for gaming or not?

Case = Thermaltake Soprano DX Silver, Aluminium € 59.00

CPU-1 = Intel® Core™2 Duo E7500 2,93GHz Socket LGA775, 1066MHz, 3MB, 45nm, Boxed m/vifte € 142.00

OR

CPU-2 =Intel Core™ 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz BOXED w/fan € 160.00

GFX = EVGA GeForce GTS 250 512MB PhysX CUDA € 164.00

mobo = EVGA nForce-780i SLI, ForTheWin (FTW), € 203.00

RAM = OCZ DDR2 PC8000 4GB KIT, Reaper X HPC, 2x2048MB, Heat Pipe, (CL5-5-5-18), E.P.P € 66.00

CPU-Fan = Zalman CNPS9500 AT Ultra Quiet CPU € 42.17

About 700€ in total.

why do you need 4core CPU ?? theres only a few games that support 2 core let alone 4 cores waste of money buying a 4core. your OS ? for 4gig or more your need either vista 64bit or Xp 64bit. Vista/Xp 32bit doesnt support ram of 4gig or higher. Thats a quick look around but Im sure you could find better value if you spend the time looking etc.

wow thx for replies

As goes for purpose it should be for gaming. Atm I have XP 32bit, but with better system I could go for Vista and maybe in a near future for W7. About CPUs, well, Im noob in those, all I know is that bigger numbers are better :roll: I just thought that 4 cores do matter, but I guess 2 cores are great as well.  The main goal of new rig would be to look into future. Thats why DDR3 and such. I would like to have your thoughts on what would you buy for yourself and why.

Really, you could go full on i7 and DDR3 ... but the cost-benefits aren't really there. What game out there will really give you huge gains using a Q or i7 processor versus a dual core? Throw lots of VRAM and RAM at the machine and run a 64 bit OS. Overclock an E series processor from Intel or something from AMD and I think you will be fine.

Just buy Vista 64 bit or hold off and wait 8 months or so for Win7.

Ok, lets sum it up until now. Lets say I get Vista 64bit. And its Intel Duo CPU. CPU should be powerful enough to serve at least 2 years and be still up to date.  Lets say its E8400 3.0GHz, now on what MoBo to put it in? And what about graphics? Should I have 512 or go for 1Gb?

It all depends on what you want to spend, what type of games you play etc etc.

quad if u plan to do something else than just game. For gaming only get E8400/8500

And NO do NOT get 780i. nforces are horrible. absolutely horrible. Get P45.

Q9550/E8500
Some nice cooler
Asus P5Q
4GB DDR2 1066MHz CL5
GTX 260 Core 216
P182
Corsair HX620

should come quite close to 800€-900€

READ: If u do afford 1200€, I would recommend you to think about i7 build really carefully

Panzer, could you explain me why he should get an E8500 over an E8400 + aftermarket cooler? Personally I'd recommend the E8400 + a good aftermarket cooler , which would probably put it in the same price range, however with better OC'ing capabilities.

(OCZ Vendetta II works like a charm for me, never goes over 50 degrees under load and hardly any noise)

It all comes to what he can afford and how big the price difference is

In a nutshell, the more memory your card has = the better it is for displaying high resolutions.

I'd say you only need 512MB up to 16xx/xxxx resolutions, anything after that you're better off with 1GB.

well, CPU and mobo has my main priority as I can upgrade GPU over time, but wouldnt really want to buy new CPU and mobo for that. Dont look at price atm, but be reasonable. I wont throw away alot of money just to look cool and fancy. I need a rig which will be able to sustain newest games in a year or two. Games I play now are Empire:TW and some FPS. And I really do feel that my CPU is just too weak. I couldnt play COD5 and Assassins Creed just because it. But just buying a new CPU for my old system seems not much reasonable. So I want to hear from you, how do you see the future and what would you go for if you had the money.

Again, I have money but I will be willing to spend it more only when you say that my investment will be enough for some 2 years and that in near future I wont have headache if my system could handle a game I purchased.

Thx

Games will benefit from having quad core in future, like its the case with GTA IV atm. If you don't want to think about upgrading in couple of years get quad. Its not that more expensive.

do you need soundcard too?

here is 900€ rig with S775 quad. i7 rig would cost about 200€ more minimum.

I like it and no, I dont need sound card. Seems pretty cool, and if I stay with DDR2 I can leave my Kingstons so its -50€

May I ask why you all prefer ASUS P5Q mobo?

Asus is solid and sexy.
The P5Q Pro is probably one of the best 775 boards.

Great for OC'ing.

You WILL want to OC. It's so easy and the benefits do show.

@legionair: I'm not dissing Panzers suggested build here, it's a very good build, for a good price, that will meet your specified requirements. BUT, one thing I've not been sure about reading through your posts, is exactly how long you want this hardware to last, ie. whether you will just be looking to upgrade in 2+ years, or whether you'll be happy to replace everything.

You see Core2 (which everyone is recommended) is yesterday/todays tech, tomorrows tech is Core i7.

Same with the question of DDR2 or DDR3 - DDR3 is the future.

Core2 will be OK in 2 years time. But only OK.

But there is, of course, budget to consider, and tomorrows tech is expensive tech.

yes... he needs to think about spending that 200€ extra really hard

Well, I discussed it with my friend and he also agrees on getting newest tech. Also he has some contacts who has contacts to get them a bit cheaper than directly from a store (no I dont know from where )

For now it seems that I will get Intel Q9550, ASUS Rampage Extreme, 4Gb DDR3 OCZ RAM. Not sure about GPU yet, but probably one of 4870.
