Had a Daughter born with Gastrochisis, spent 6 weeks in SCBU with her, watched her almost die, watched other babies die.

Watched my Mum die through cancer, was lucky enough to be at her side when she died.

Went to the FA CUP final as a supporter of my team.  The last time this happened was 1927, it also happened last year.

They are the three main ones, the fa cup didnt really change my life but the other two did.

1.  I stopped feeling sorry for myself thinking 'why me?' and soon learned there is always someone worse off than you. (Daughter)
2.  Never took anything for granted and stopped regretting things (Mum)

After an admitted googling of Gastrochisis I have to ask. How did she recover?

She has no belly button other than that she is your average 8 year old girl, who as Im sure you can all tell by now Im extremely proud of.  She contracted septicemia (sp) and almost died 4 weeks after birth and operation.  First 3 years were full of constipation where she would just disappear under a table somewhere and sit and strain with her knees next to her ears.

I have never gone into the full story as I bang on about her and my Mum enough but I will one day, quite remarkable and I will forever pinch myself as to how this miracle happened, she shouldn't really be here, I am forever grateful that she is.  Whether she can have her own children remains to be seen.

Well congrats on everything working out. Does she understand the circumstances of her birth by any chance?

Well she knows she is 'special' and its from this time of the year on now she gets a little nervous.  When the summer really kicks in she won't wear a bikini where her tummy is on show but more of a swimming costume.  I have a picture from when she was 15 mins old, she has all pipes connected to her and what looks like a big cumberland sausage on her wrapped up in cling film - that was the large n small intestines, kidney, liver and bowel.  I show her the picture and she looks at me as if Im joking.

Surgeons have said they will build her a belly button when she is older so she dosent stand out in a crowd but I hope to bring her up in such a way she turns and says 'Go fuck yaself' when she will get picked on etc, you know what kids can be like.

We never got a full explanation as to why this happened, I put it down to coal mines or chemical works.  They showed us a map of the whole world which had pins in it for ever reported case.  South Wales and China stood out like sore thumbs.

Guess it depends upon the career change, huh?

But, children changed my life 800x more than marriage.  I had no idea how much those little buggers would alter the course of my life.

Oh, and anyone that ever tells you "having a dog is good training for having kids" has never had kids.  That's like saying breaking a twig is good training for cutting down a forest.
