  • Question about non-widescreen games on widescreen monitor

Can they run without auto-stretching?  My birthday is coming up (4/26) and I think I want a widescreen monitor so I can finally ditch this CRT.  But after seeing my brother's monitor stretch BF2 with no apparent way to just make it into a 4:3 box instead, I wonder if it's possible to run games that don't support widescreen that way.  I REALLY don't want it to stretch the picture if I'm trying to play a game of BF1942 or HL1 or any other older games that don't support widescreen.

So do most of them have a feature to only play it at 4:3 or am I screwed to have stretched picture forever?

It's slightly stretched I think it looks fine.

Widescreen fixer tweaks your field of view so it doesn't look as stretched. It works with BF2, 2142, CoD2,4,5 and Bioshock. I'm not sure what you could do for other games though

I find it quite disappointing that there's no such feature.  wtf with these dumbass companies.  T.V.s can do it, so why can't comp screens?

I don't know what video card you have but Nvidia has an option in it's control panel to display the pixesl prodused 1:1, so if you play at 1280x1024 on a 1680 x 1050 monitor you'll mave balck bars on the side and small black bars at the top and bottom.   not sure if ATI has this option.

@ebug, most of those games you listed natively support wide screen.

There is a feature and it's called GPU Scaling, it works exactly as jaymz described. In the ATi CCC, it's under "Attributes" for the monitor. I don't know where it is in the nVidia controls but I know they have one to.

Well, that's good.  I have an 8600GT.

I hope I can it can even handle widescreen even though it's only backed by a 3.2GHz Prescott Pentium 4.

I have an 24" LG monitor that can run in 3 modes:
Full - the image is stretched to fill the entire screen.
Original - the image is stretched to fill as much of the screen as it can without distorting.
1:1 - the image will only take up as many pixels as the resolution.
In other words, if I run a game at 1024x768 on this monitor (native 1920x1200) then Full will enlarge and distort the image, Original will only enlarge it and 1:1 will make it appear as a little box in the middle or the screen.
The monitor is the LG L246WH. It might be out of your price range, but I'm sure that there are other brands/sizes that do the same things.

This

But CoD4/5 have 1650x1080 as a choice, so I never needed it for them.  As for BF2, who the hell doesnt have widescreen support anymore?

For the record, it's 1680x1050.

CPU is of lesser concern. What GPU do you have?

It's too early, damnit.

I'm guessing that's a good enough GPU?  I'm just making sure

Right now I play everything at 1152x864 so would it make a large penalty if I played at 1440x900 or 1680x1050

Well the 8600GT isn't a very strong GPU. You could probably play older games like BF2 and such with full graphics at 1680x1050, but stuff like COD4 or COD5 or such probably would be a bit laggy.
