Alreeeet guys.

Not had many tech problems for a while now but this is a strange one for you!

I've got an X-Fi sound card which I've had for about 2 years and it's recently started playing up.

Sometimes when I boot up it doesn't show up in 'sounds' (from control panel) however, if I go on device manager it shows the sound card - but it says there are no drivers installed (which they are!) Sometimes when turn the pc off and unplug the power then turn it on again it shows up.

I've tried uninstalling and installing the most up to date drivers but that doesn't work.

I'm fairly sure it's not a hardware problem, I just want to know what's causing it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Reformat.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'm sure it can be fixed without doing that...

Friend of mine has exactly the same issues with his Xi-Fi card, he has tried numerous things in attempts to fix it, without much success I'm afraid. It's led him to format a couple of times and recently it does seem to have cured it, but the same was true last time he formatted and then it just started happening randomly again...

Edit: he also tried different pci slots but it still seemed to happen, although this is definitely something you should try.

I have custom creative vista driver that solved all my audio issues with creative sound cards. I'll upload it when I got more time. Worth the shot.

Awesome, sounds good. Because I'm pretty sure it's software related as it does show up in device manager.

You need to have Creatives own driver installed before installing this 'patch' to get the audio console etc.

Extract and run setup.exe

I'm not 100% sure if the installer works for your card but hell, for 24mb download its worth the try

Its mix of creative official, daniel.k and many others. GL!
