So there I was, just surfin da webz when the internet craps out.

I powercycle both the router and modem, and still no dice.  If I connect a computer directly to the modem, it can connect to the internet and all's good (after power-cycling the modem).  But if I run that wire into the router, and a wire from there to my computer, I can't.  I'm almost convinced the router's fine.  It's a WRT-54G, flashed with DD-WRT, that's been solid for at least 2 years.  I can connect to the rest of my network as well using it - just not the internet.

I swapped out the WRT-54G with a working DI-524 (at least, I think it's working).  It had the same issues as the WRT-54G.

I'm convinced it's the modem, and that there's something wrong with it, because the Optimum Online guy said that I would have to powercycle the modem to recognize either a router or computer.  Ok, sounds fine to me...but it only wants to recognize a computer.  It's not recognizing a router at all.

What the FUCK is going on here?

edit: the modem is a motorola SBV5120 @ 192.168.100.1 - should i reset it?

If it suddenly lost internet, and you didn't change anything, I can't see how it would be a setting problem.

In the past, my internet has done the same and we had to call the ISP and they did something and then it worked again, but I'm not sure what they did.

Also, I don't recommend you run straight off the modem with no firewall... bad idea.

yeah, i know it's a bad idea, but i don't have much choice.  at least i have windows firewall running if not my trusty hardware-side firewall.

i have called the ISP and they're saying it's an issue with my router.  what can you expect from them?  i think the modem crapped out.

I assume you tried different wires, I had a similar problem and it was caused but a bad outdoor wire I believe. 3 different people came to fix it and I think each one did something different

I'll check with another ethernet cable, but I doubt it'd just shit itself like that.

"Bad outdoor wire"?  Do you mean the coax?  I doubt it's that either, for the reason above + our phone/TV would probably not be working if something was wrong with it.

Yeah, ran from the modem to the splitter and I assume one ran from the phone to the splitter as well. One guy I believe changed a wire and another might have changed the splitter, not sure which worked

i fixed it.  it was as simple as holding the router's reset button (which means i have to configure everything again), but i skipped over that step, instead powercycling the router and resetting it via web interface.  guess that wasn't good enough.
