best video format for editing?

ok the avi files my video cam makes wont load in my video editor, and i dont know why. and back before i reformatted they were blacking out everytime i did any type of editing to the file.

so if im going to spend hours converting these files to another format, in hopes they will stop being fucktards what format should i go to?

i had all the proper codecs before i reformatted im sure, back when they were going black. now they just wont load in either Corel video studio or Windows movie maker. it just says 'corrupt or unsupported file'

they play just fine. i use vlc to play them. works like a charm.

EDIT:

In windows movie maker it loads it but treats it as if its an audio file. and refuses to play any video in the file.

Ill try Vegas just for the hell of it.

vista ultimate
amd 3200
geforce 7800

i dont know if its just problems with the files the camera makes, its a pretty low quality camera and i wouldnt be suprised if it produced fucked up files.

It does however produce avi files.

Are you draging it to the Video section of the timeline. It'll give you a black screen and treat it as a song if you put it in Audio/Music.

Okay im trying it on vegas and it does the same thing as wmm, it treates them as audio files. even though when i go to properties it claims they are AVI

Wont let me put it in the video part. and even when i try to just play it through windows movie maker, like in the box on the right side of the screen, it doesnt show any video. just audio,
