Fuzzy Pictures from a Nikon D40

The camera has been taking really fuzzy and grainy pictures lately. Anyone know why?
I use a Nikon 55-200mm VR lense and also a 18-55mm lense.If anyone has anything please let me know.

what mode were you using for that picture

if both the lenses are fucked like that its probably your camera itself

try cleaning it?

Ah ok, shooting in auto has huge limitations and auto often gets it wrong.

Change to AV mode, set the AV to 4.0, ISO to 200 and thats all, if you have time go outside and take a few shots where there is some decent light, and see if that makes a difference, I'm pretty sure it will...post the results here if you can.

A faulty card will do this. My older/cheaper card would do this from time to time. The noise is from randomly generated pixels. It has something to do with how your image is stored on your camera just before it writes it to the card (cache). I don't think shooting in auto would make such a grainy image. I do recommend shooting in raw whenever possible though.

Unlikely, but could possibly be your camera's somehow shooting at an immensely high ISO.

He is. But 1600 would not look that bad on my camera. For me it absolutely was the card. I would try the other recommendation before buying a new card though.

Shoot in Aperture Priority mode.

Use the front wheel to change the aperture. (I think...that's how it is on the D80.)

I usually use 1.8 to 5.6, depending on what I want.
(1.8 fuzzier background, in case you don't know that)

And as others have said, high ISO will screw the quality up. I never go higher than 640, and always try to use 100-200.

Yeah, looks like a high ISO setting leading to noise. Stick it in photoshop and Filter > Noise > Despeckle, might help.
