The AA is warning that hundreds of lives are being put at risk by young motorists modifying cars with nitrous oxide to boost their power.

The motoring organisation says the kits are dangerous and need tighter controls.
Nitrous systems are legal. The AA says they are fine on high end cars like a Jaguar or a Ferrari but if you put them on some older types of car they could cause serious damage to the vehicle at high speed.

I have to admit, I agree with the AA here. I cant see any reason for needing, or using Nos on public roads, nevermind in the sorts of cars that boy-racers have. Saxos, Novas (lol), Corsas, Puntos, Clios...just aren't made for it.

For track days, etc, I see no problem with it, however, to enforce that, Id imagine would be pretty hard. Id be more happy to see it banned fullstop.

Stop calling it Nos. NOS is a brand, and the gas is called nitrous oxide or NO2.

The article is flawed, anyway. Sure, it's fine to put nitrous on a high end car but it's not on an older car. Either way, if you don't follow the rules in using the system, you are going to damage and/or destroy your engine. It's simple physics. You need more fuel when you are adding nitrous to the system. If you don't ... well ... you know. Poof.

But nitrous is needed no where else except on a race track. It's completely and totally unnecessary for use on public roads and does need to be banned. Granted, your car won't ever explode like in F&F because that's not what the gas does. But you will lose traction from the sudden burst of power if your tires aren't up to snuff and you could damage your engine leaving you dead on the road if you aren't doing things right. On top of that, you could also lose control from the sudden burst of power even if your tires are keeping traction.

Ban nitrous from the public road but leave it for racing bodies to decide if the product is legal on the track.

Have you ever had any experience of using NO2 on turbo charged cars? Small injections of it at very low RPM (between 1-3K RPM) help to virtually eliminate turbo lag. Once the turbo is on boost the NO2 is cut.

You could of course still argue that it's unnecessary to cut out turbo lag on the road but then

It's not a drug Mitch. Cops will catch people with nos, either fine them or confiscate their cars. No point having nos without a car and boy racers typically have too much debt to afford getting another one.

They banned neons here in NZ. I always thought that was kind of a shame, you have to admit it does look cool in a "the biggest thing I have in my pants is my wallet" kind of way.

It's up to the 'boy racer' to decide what he can purchase with the amount of debt he owes. If you tune your car to the point where you need Nos, and your racing people who you need Nos to beat, then you've got some kind of income that supports the hobby.

A cop isn't gunna know if your using Nos unless he looks.

How bout this

Make it a law that any service that installs/supplies Nitrous Oxide in cars must check for a Nitrous Permit in order to install and or supply the driver, and to get a Nitrous permit your car has to be inspected by a mechanic who is certified for Nitrous Inspection to give the title holder a permit for said car, then they can give different levels of permits for each car (For larger NOS setups)

That way you can have Nitrous without having to worry about idiots blowing their engines up and loosing control of their cars
