In Florida.

The eco-city, called Babcock Ranch, is a joint venture between a real estate developer, Kitson & Partners, and Florida Power & Light, and will be located near Fort Myers, Florida.

Babcock Ranch will include almost 20,000 houses and 6 million square feet of mixed retail, office, and light industrial space, and have city-wide wireless internet and electric car charging stations throughout.

The city will be fully powered by solar during the day, and produce an excess of electricity that will be exported to the grid. The CEO of Kitson said the project will serve as a model to other communities and be a “living laboratory for companies, workers and families ready to reap the rewards of innovation.”

Florida Power & Light expects to break ground on the $400 million solar PV plant this year, pending regulatory approval. Construction of Babcock Ranch is slated for the summer of 2010.

The project’s cost is estimated at $2 billion, and is expected to create 20,000 jobs.

Very interesting. I wonder if the developers will be providing the residents with electric cars.

Good shit.

How much land do all those solar panels take up? It'd be nice to see this example carry over to other communities, but developers are going to have to compare the cost of buying/installing/maintaining the solar panels, as well as any lost potential revenue from people buying houses that would've been there instead, versus the amount of money they're going to save from generating their own power.

The panels are going to be on 350 acres of dedicated land and rooftops. There is about 73,000 acres for the whole project.

krazed I would imagine that they would fold or have some sort of other form of protection.

Definitely more, if you consider the cost of terrorism. Everytime you've ever filled your tank, you've indirectly given money to people who financially support terrorists.

Top work. Hopefully this will start to spread further. Land shouldnt be a problem as there should be a lot of roof space. Multi story buildings can also have their windows coated with a PV film that is transparent.

Indeed. In fact the roof space is reserved for expansion and isn't included in the 75 megawatt solar production facility.

Florida has less smog, so solar power would be easier to implement in Florida.  Although...  it would probably be easiest to implement in Arizona.

Well, Florida is the "Sunshine state". AZ has some of the countries worst polluting plants btw. Check out BHP copper.

Oil company is going to suicide bomb the city so it looks like a Muslim attack then they invade iran and steal the oil (thus, killing two birds with one stone)

you heard it here first

But seriously, there are going to be alot of powerful people in the USA that will do alot of shit to try and sabotage this or make it not as successful as it could be

It's upto you, Kez, to save the world from the Oil corps
