Ok, so here is a quick run down of the mass shootings these past weeks.

Geneva County and Coffee County, Alabama. March 12 2009.

Oakland California, March 21, 2009

North Carolina. March 29, 2009.

Santa Clara, California, March 30, 2009

Binghamton, New York. April 3, 2009

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. April 4, 2009

Seriously, WTF is going on? why do people feel the need to go and kill all these people in mass shootings? why do they even have guns?

Is this just the beginning?

Spring is killing season. After a long winter of planning the motions murderers like to test the water by firing a few rounds into crowds. More than 20 people in the first shooting and it's rumoured to be a long killin' season.

I blame the economy coupled with global warming, with a slight chance of internet madness playing a role.

Right. The point of my post was to mock the idea that a single factor could be pinned as the cause to all of these events. I was almost certian we were all on the same page...

There isnt a single factor for ANYTHING to happen. Im not asking for a single factor here. All i am saying is that this seems to be escalating. Be it by copycats, or putting this idea into already disgruntled peoples minds.

A lot of issues happen around this time of the year which is a statistical aberation.   There's a theory out there somewhere about the cycle of the equinox or something like that.  Google worthy?

Media play gets some people interested in making a scene vs. just offing themselves.
Economic despair doesn't help.
...then their are a host of personal factors...

Have a look at how many of the shooters were stopped by a law abiding citizen carrying a concealed weapon...

California. New York, Pennsylvania.  Northern States (and the People's Republic of California).  NOT in states which have been terribly friendly to gun owners.  So, fewer numbers of people carrying in public, less of a chance of them stopping the nutjob.

That is like me making fun of you for not voting for Obama.

Oh, and I think a lot of this is 'copycat' stuff.  They see it in the news, see how much media play it gets, and decide "I can do that!"  Maybe these are people who would commint suicide in a nice, quiet way until they saw the news and got some idea 'to show the world.'

Half of the shootings were in "may issue" states (states where the local LEOs can deny permits for pretty much any reason they feel like).
How many occured in "Gun-free zones?"
Add to that the fact that only 1-2% of the population is licensed to carry, and not all of those people do.

There have been multiple active shooters who had portrayed the Columbine killers in a positive light and made comments about becomming famous, etc.  The media play does have an effect.

I wish there were statistics for the number of mass shootings for the past 20 years. I have a feeling that this isn't a widespread a problem as the media makes it and that they're just reporting it more to fill time. Now I know getting shot to death is a problem but I think that for some reason gun crime rates are actually going down in most places and mass murderers like these have actually gone down. Sorta like how child abductions were really low at one point but the media caused a panic by showing a new little kids getting snatched every 2 days.

That depends on if you include gang violence.  If yes, mass shootings have probably gone down.  If you mean the "active shooter" involving a person attacking random individuals, I believe it is on the increase in the past decade, in the US(although I have not studied the stats very carefully).  The problem is not as widespread as the media would have some believe, but it is a concern (domestic and gang violence are MUCH more likely, but not as dramatic for ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/CNN).

Overall crime rates ARE going down, according to the FBI UCR.

Virginia Tech shooting was in a "gun free zone" of a school.

Yes, alabama was an aberation.  But even in the shootings in states that have progressive concealed carry laws, most shootings have happened in areas where carrying a gun is still prohibited.

That being said, how many times are we going to argue one of the arguements that can not be won by either side?  It is an ideological difference.

not arguing really.  just thought that saying only california and northern states are the states that have all the mass shootings is pretty ignorant.  you just chose to leave other shootings out to enforce a point.
