Time Warner`s Broadband Cap Plans Draw Lawmaker's Ire

eWeek wrote:

Time Warner's broadband cap plan may result in federal legislation aimed at unfair tiered price structures from Internet providers. Angered over Time Warner's pricing plans, U.S. Rep. Eric Massa of New York says that's exactly what he has in mind, promising a bill to curb tiers, particularly in areas where a broadband provider owns a monopoly on service.

If Time Warner thought that its hastily revised broadband cap plan to include an unlimited usage tier would appease U.S. Rep. Eric Massa, the cable broadband provider was wrong. Massa, who represents a New York district where Time Warner is planning to roll out its cap plan, said April 10 he is drafting legislation to prohibit unfair tiered price structures from Internet providers.

Massa responded sharply April 7 when Time Warner said it was introducing a tiered usage cap plan in a three-state trial pricing program. Massa called it "nothing more than a large corporation making a move to force customers into paying more money." The next day, Time Warner said it would offer an unlimited usage tier.

It didn't make Massa any happier.
Comment: Ok, seems Congress is now getting involved and at least one representative is pissed.  When there's no alternative the congressman is saying that customers will be paying 3x what they pay now....Time Warner has a monopoly is some areas.

P.S.  I made a new thread instead of continuing the other because this is a next phase in the discussion.

I'm researching internet providers in my new neighborhood in Texas. TW is basically the only broadband provider there. They are rolling out bandwith caps in Austin, but not yet in SA. I'm hoping that they get hit with some kind of antitrust/monopoly violation before they decide to hit the much larger SA market with their caps.

I know. I lived there for four years before being transferred to DC.

Time to head back.

Eh...  I doubt this is gonna do much to stop the caps from spreading.  Next thing you know, they'll charge by the megabyte.

As I said before, ISP's are doing this together. It's distinctly anti competitive, price fixing essentially. I'm conservative, not a fan over over regulating.. but this needs to be investigated.

It's hard to get the government to investigate something they're paid to ignore.

Then again, people are saying this has to do with the costs of upgrading infrastructure.  I honestly don't know what to believe anymore other than that, as consumers, we're basically fucked.

Regulating is an iffy subject, but considering how much this industry has been subsidised by the government, how many government dollars they've happily taken in tax breaks and whatnot, and how little they have to show for it, it's an insult to the country for service providers to start rolling out caps, and it should be curbed before it spills over to other service providers operating networks where these caps aren't needed. It's a ball that -will- keep rolling if it isn't stopped.

Cable operators need to bite the bullet and stop overselling their inefficient and technologically inferior networks. Cable is a poor solution to a problem that was always fiscal rather than technological, and it's showing.

Don't believe the hype. Money is tight, people are dropping premium subscriptions, everyone is hurting.. the cable companies just think that they can avoid the recession by having their loyal customers make up the difference.

You'll have to explain whatever it was you said in that other thread because honestly, I couldn't follow most of it.

Ohh they're smart. They know FIOS would wipe the floor with their asses so they start their trials in a market with little to no choice.. or as the article puts it "it's marketing suicide in a FiOS market". This despite the fact Verzion just built their fiber infrastructure from relative scratch.

Now it's going to cost you $150 a month for an unlimited plan. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/0 … -a-month//

By comparison, Comcast’s basic broadband offering costs $43 a month and has a cap of 250 gigabytes. Verizon’s cheapest broadband package with its FiOS service costs $45 a month and has no download limit.

I have been waiting for a year for FiOS to be available in my area. $10 cheaper then cable and much more faster.

FiOS fucking rules.

But it's not offered where I'm moving. To get equivalent service, I'll have to pay more than $30 a month more.

So I'm losing my precious.

Must have. Precious.
