I just returned from seeing my girlfriend and it was just amazing.

But what i wanted to talk about was the economy...i was in Salt Lake city utah, and in england i hear the the american economy is in trouble with no new jobs being created and noone spending.

What i saw was the total opposite, infact, what i saw didnt even look like a recession, it looked like there has never been one.

I saw heaps of new stores opening, and so many job advertisements on buildings i lost count.

So is it all just blown out of proportion with the economy?

It depends upon where in America you go. Most of this recession's power is really just overreaction to a weak sector in the economy.

take a walk down wall street to see the recession. honestly though, i think this particular one if affecting wealthy people more than the average american, but tbh i dont give a crap. personally, i haven't been impacted too badly by this recession.

Well the irish recession is definitely a reality...a lot of my friends have lost their jobs, people with degrees and skills.

Maybe the US is just bigger and has different levels of recession depending on the region and its primary industries, try visiting Detroit next time to see the difference.

The biggest hit was to the lending industry and to the stock market. For a while there, no one could get a loan. Good credit, bad credit, there just weren't any available. People are upside down on their mortgages and most are spending less as a result. It's slowly affecting more and more businesses. Many construction projects are on hold or have been canceled all together. It will take years for the full effect of all this to be seen. It's mostly people's retirement funds and 401k's that are gone. Everyday life still goes on but the future is looking pretty meek for a lot of folks trying to retire. I know my parents will have to work until they physically can't do it anymore. They had to abandon their house they'd been paying on for 30 years due to a bad refinance they did 5 years ago. The house was no longer worth what they owed on it. The same story played out by thousands of Americans.

Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it

What are you expecting to see in the streets as a sign of a recession? There's nothing to see in Amsterdam that shows there's one. Stoke is just a shithole, so you'd think you were permanently in one.

In Ireland it appears to be affecting people who had been under the illusion that they were wealthy, people who had taken out irresponsible loans and mortgages or regular people who thought they could be property developers by buying 3, 4 and 5 houses on credit only to find the bottom fall out of the market. As a knock on effect lending has now seized up completely and many small businesses and industries can't get the financing to stay afloat, hence more regular Joes on the dole queue.

Elite, Utah is the one of the few states hit the least by the recession. However, you haven't been here long enough to see everything that goes on. Just the other day in the paper was an article on how foreclosures are up 56% over this time last year. Bankruptcies are up as well. The state has allotted money to home buyers that buy new homes (homes not lived in) along with the federal money to get new homes moved off the market and get construction going again.

Things certainly aren't as bad here as they are in other places, but we have not been immune to this economic downturn.

Florida is supposed to be one of the hardest hit. I went to Bush Gardens last week and it was packed. I also drive by the mall everday on the way to work and it is also crowded. There has of course been a down turn, but relative to what? People are losing jobs, but I do believe the amount is blown out of proportion. I think the fear is what it could be if we don't stop the bleeding asap.

My business (Real Estate) has definitely picked up over the last couple months. It had been sketchy the four months or so before it.

I believe I had explained that poverty in the US is not being able to afford the latest graphics card.

I think I asked how we could be in a recession when game consoles and ipods and all the other latest gadgets are flying off of the shelves.

Glad you were able to see my point first hand. Bottomline is Americans are spoiled to the core. We expect everything, and when it is not forth coming immediately it must be because of an economic disaster, because it couldn't be our fault.

My guess is that the recession hit in those that many people think describe the entire United States (New York, California, Florida, Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas). Most of the rest of us are doing fine. Granted, here in Texas we ahve taken a bit of a hit (a lot of our big companies have been moving factories south of the border), but it is nothing scary or terrible at this point. It looks like the company I am working for is about to go under, but from all appearances, that is due to really inept handling by cooperate. Yes, I am already looking for a new job, and I am also going to school. I can read the writing on the wall; consider this rat deserting this particular sinking ship.

I think it's more to do with the area, but even more so the type of business you are in. I know at my job we've been hit a fair amount. But, thats because I work in a music store selling Double Basses/music/accessories etc. Hell Steinway, the huge piano company is going out of business too. Yet, my brother and my mother who work in a moderate sized x-ray/mammogram/MRI/etc work have barely been hit just because that's simply something people need. It's just the type of business you are in.
