Hey... building a budget ass build for a friend, you know, one of those keep it cheap ones. looking at

e5200
buffalo select 2gb ddr2 800
samsung dvd writer
vista home premium
samsung f1 500gb

and either a
gigabyte GA-G31-E2SL
or
gigabyte GA-G41-E2SL

question is:
Is the G41 worth 14 bucks more in a build thats probably gonna see Facebook, e-mail, pictures, and most likely porn.....

Vista runs perfectly fine on any C2D. Not even my 1.83GHz laptop has any issues with it.

On topic, the graphics circuit in the G41 is quite a bit better than what's in the G31. If using Vista with Aero, it'll give quite a bit smoother sailing, and if he ever wants to play a game, he actually has a little bit of junk in the trunk.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I think he was referring to the 2GB of RAM.. If you're going to run Vista it's highly recommended to run on 4GB, OP.

For that kind of usage 2 gig should be fine.  My wife's laptop runs vista perfectly smooth with 2 gig for web sufing and office ect.  If your going to be gaming that's when you need 4 gig as games eat up a lot more memory than web browsers.

That same laptop has 2GB RAM. I play BF2 on it.

thx for the on topic input guys...  by all accounts 2GB is fine for vista, especially if its a comp used for minimal tasks. If he wants to do more later its easy to get another 2GB stick. I'll prob just go with the g41.
