This may be a pretty dumb question but I'll ask anyways.

I sent all my applications by e-mail along with my CV. From experience would you advise me to actually call up or are job applications by email sufficient?

email is fine. If you ring up, they'll tell you to email your CV anyway.

At your age/experince if you don't hear anything (unless you're positive you should have at least got an interview) you've prob not been successful.

Securing a job in this economic climate is gonna be tough...

If the ad didn't say anything about when they might be contacting you or if there was no deadline when to send the application, I'd give them a call after 1-2 weeks. And with a deadline, call them 1-2 weeks after the deadline to ask about when something might be informed or ppl asked to interviews. It shows them that you're genuinly interested in the job (in their point of view). If there is a number that says call if you have questions, plan some sneaky questions in advance so the call won't be "Hi! Ok, bye!".

How serious are these jobs? If this is your career, you may want to call them up to confirm receipt of your resume and ask a few questions about how long will they get back to you etc. You have to seem interested.

If it's just a part time job like KFC, then who cares.

Are these firms? It's actually easier to call up small firms and ask then it is for big firms as they have procedures for these sorts of things. If it's KFC or the like, then I wouldn't give them the time of day.

If you never hear back always ring them, just to ask why your application may have failed. Don't be pushy, just ask out of curiosity so you can learn for next time
