How high could it go and could it handle AA?  This is on a 3 year old comp(I say this because I don't know what the processor is) that is running Vista with 1GB of RAM.  It's my cousins computer and my brother thinks it's lagging because of the GeForce 7300LE 64MB currently in it.

1 gig of RAM and Vista.... might have something to do with it.

-9400GT isn't really an upgrade for anything.
-1GB RAM and Vista doesn't mix.
-1GB RAM and BF2 doesn't mix.
-64MB VRAM and BF2 doesn't mix.
-7300LE will run BF2 on low-med and no AA at 1280x1024.

In short, pretty much everything in his computer is really, really poorly optimized.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My brother doubts my cousin will spend more than 75$

The best he could probably do is some more RAM and a cheapy graphics card

Edit: For 5$ more than the 9400GS, this 8600GTS looks pretty good I think:

4670. As for RAM, you can get another 2GB for $15 in today's world. Superior performance compared to both 9400GT, 7300LE and 8600GTS.

the important questions are: is the mobo AGP and what PSU he got?

It's PCI-e and since it's Dell, I wouldn't expect much from the PSU, not that any card he would get would tax it though.  My 8600GT doesn't even need to plug into the PSU.

I don't know much for sure though, my brother called me from the house him and my cousin share and told me about it

2+ gigs of ram and an 8600GT/S will run BF2 on high with all the AA he wants, unless his processor is really shit. If it is a fairly fast single core it should be fine
