In reply to Cams russia thread.

There's dirt poor, then there's desert poor. These graves sit mostly untended, the contents nameless.

The range cattle are fearless and hostile. They are known to attack the cowboys whos sorry lot it is to herd them. Wind power has been the only game here for 130 years. As it turns water is drawn from the Earth to feed these beasts and the bighorn sheep and bobcats that frequent the concrete water tanks.

Funny and sad that the only inhabital places here are the same ones the indians used for thousands of years. They too knew where and how to find water. We exterminate them, and then wonder at and study their creations.

I am a bad traveler. I don't know what it is, but it's about 14 inches long and is rampaging through the brush not far from my feet, devouring all before it. I have climbed a twenty foot water shoot to a secret grassy alcove. There is no sound but for the wind and the birds and the hungry reptile. I am far away from the bankers, the news and all the fucked up shit about the economy.

Mitchell Caverns. There is enough in that link about the caverns, so I'll just post a few pix of the inside and the many flowers there and around Banshee Canyon where we camped.

The menu; grilled potato chips, herbed goat cheese with grilled grapes, hotdogs stuffed with cheese, sourkraut and wrapped in bacon. Sage bread, roast potatoes. LOTS of beer and wine. I got way drunk, began doing a fire dance and fell face first into the flames ( serious ). I sort of rolled through the flames and onto the ground. My serape was on fire, but I quickly tapped it out and was otherwise unscathed. Note to self; no more fire dance.

Ha.
You've never had them, most likely. It's a party in your mouth.

Interesting to note that the area I am in is volcanic, with the last eruption scare in the 1930's. Before that, some 11,000 years ago it was all tropical rain forest and giant inland seas. The indians are clearly to blame for climate change as that's exactly how long they are believed to have been inhabitating the Mojave. It was rain forest when they showed up, and now its a desert.

Do you have the full recipe for those? I'm serious, I think I may have found a reason to use the barbeque for the first time this year...

It's all about the Panini maker when camping

Best $20 I've ever spent....well, except for that one time in band camp...

I have one of those George Foreman things, I could probably make a herbed grilled cheesed graped baguette if I felt like it. But I'll stick to herbed grilled cheesed tomatoed baguette/panini instead

You were at mitchell caverns this weekend? I was all over the Preserve as well. Stayed in the Granite Mountains for a few nights then went to the New York mountains for a night.

Fantastic weather this weekend

2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard
2 tablespoons katsup
half cup sauerkraut, drained and chopped
dogs
buns
bacon cheddar cheese

mix the mustard and katsup with the sauerkraut, slit the dogs almost in half lengthwise, stuff half full with the mixture, place strips of cheddar in there, wrap with thick bacon and secure with toothpics.
flame roast over high heat until the bacon is done. The best hotdog you will ever eat. I also put minced onion in mine and sprinkle the assembled concoction with dried sage.

As Stryyker said, it's in the Mojave Preserve. My truck is just out of site in the photo with the tents.
You know where to find the other picture kimmmmmmmmmmmm. I changed the password however.

Holy shit to that. I opened my window coming through the 91/55 corridor to be blasted by air that could make steel malleable.

When I went to bed last night it was 86 degrees. Damn this Earth. Its supposed to be like this for most of the summer too.

I know. And you know what I do for a living. We took this trip because I anticipate being broke over the summer.

That graveyard btw is in Dagget. Holy God what a shithole. We came back along route 66 for as far as we could. One of the lingering questions I always come back with is why in the hell do those people collect so much junk? Imagine living in one of those mobil homes along the 40. What a wretched existence. The yards filled with wrecked cars and junk of all sorts. Do those people not know that shit can be scrapped for cash? Is it that only crazy people live out there or does living there drive you insane?

Your hotdog idea sounds great I'm going to have to give it a go sometime. I take it you need quite fat dogs to stuff em?

Seriously. I hope you do some business though. New homes have gutters, even if there is no rain ya know?

Oh god. We stopped in Goffs near the 40

I can see (as i'm sure you do too) the draw of the desert to be alone, but spending a lifetime out there is borderline insane. Unless you cook meth, which is always a possibility.

There are a large number of recipes you can get by googling " cooking with fire ".

The flame and smoke create a magical flavor and it is not hard to prepare exotic and fancy looking food with a little practice.
