A couple days ago, I popped in a VHS copy of Army of Darkness into my (new) bedside VCR. The clicking, whirring and even the scraggly audio/video flaws of VHS came to light once more, accompied the same warm feeling I get when I chunk an 8/16-bit game cartridge into its accompanying system or install a PC game that isn't hobbled by a serial or CD-in-drive-to-start requirements. Over the years I've resisted plenty of temptations (and suggestions) to save space and eject all my old VHS films and have instead kept hundreds stored in boxes devoid of sunlight and moisture. I've given some of the lightweight films away or sold them, but that's about it.
As to the subject header, has the VHS format, after years of oppression by DVD's, finally become nostalgic in a good way? The question's a bit subjective, I suppose, but records are still sold at my local Fred Meyer.
I mean, holy shit, I'm watching Army of Darkness in Hi-Fi stereo! You can tell i'm on the bleeding edge now. Makes me want to break out reel-to-reel Willy Wonka.
