The glories of Alberta's landscape are being mocked across Great Britain thanks to a provincial government ad campaign that used England as a stand-in for the province.
The BBC, the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph are reporting on Alberta's ad campaign that depicts smiling sweater-clad kids running along a beach that is really in the Northumberland region of England.
The province has pulled the photo from most of its campaign but is keeping it in the promotional video, saying it was done intentionally to give the online movie a global focus.
The BBC is running comparisons between the two regions, noting that Northumberland is famous for clog dancing while Alberta is known for, in the BBC's words, "rodeo festivals."
The Daily Telegraph notes that while both areas rely on tourism, visitors to Northumberland enjoy temperate weather year-round, while Alberta's climate swings wildly from 40 C in summer to -54 C in winter.
Premier Ed Stelmach's government has been criticized for initially defending the photo, but then, as public pressure mounted, admitting on a website that it was "a screw-up."
