I have a few second hand bits of electronics that seem to have been owned by a decade's worth of smokers. I'd rather not tear open and clean them manually (as with computers), so I was wondering if anybody knew a feasable folk method of de-stenchifying them so my place didn't smell like a chain-smoker's den?
spray them with a hose? Dip them in tomato sauce? Nah, can't think of anything. I know I've seen a deodorizer for smokers for sale, but I think that's just for clothing...unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Hit them up with some Oust.
Get one of those air fresheners that you'd normally put in a car inside your PC case.
It is the dust that you smell, so get rid of the dust and you get rid of the smell.

maybe some sort of ionizer? like the ones that were part of the whole sharper image phase a little while back? damn those things were popular.
"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
It's a Sega Genesis and an N64. I've removed what dust I could access without tearing them apart with some 91% isoprophyl and swabs. I'll try 'Oust'ing the shop I've got them in to see if that works, but if not I'll probably have to pull them apart (ugh). There isn't too much dust in them, but currently enough odor for a non-smoker like me to want no part of it in my house.

Cigarette smoke leaves an oily film on electronics. This is what you are smelling, and until you clean the parts off with alcohol, they will smell for quite some time.

Yeah, the smoke carries moisture, so it's like a filthy(ier) dust. There isn't a lot of it (precluding the absolute necessity to open the stuff up and clean it), but just enough to bug me, which is why I asked about deodorizing in the first place.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

I'll probably hit it with a face mask, goggles, air gun and alcohol swabs tomorrow and see how it fares. If I have to crack open the chassis I'm going to be pissed.

I remember a while back using some sort of electronics cleaning spray that was safe to spray on electronic boards (while unplugged hehe). It evaporated fast too.
Almost finished with the Sega 3. I'm using denatured alcohol baths on the chassis and 91% isoprophyl wiping on the circuitboard (I'm not sure about how well the components are sealed, so I'm not bathing it). It's removed the smell from the plastics, but the smoker crap was there for long enough for the metal circuitboard cap to spot-rust and gouge where it was caked the heaviest. I don't like rust either, but at least it doesn't smell. A bit of naval jelly should get it off just fine. Finally, I'll seal the disassembled parts in a shoe box with a can of baking soda for awhile and it should be properly decontaminated. That's how much I hate smoker smell. Fortunately, the N64 only required being hit with the air compressor. A bit of alcohol here and there and that should be ready as well.
All this should be done by the time I choose a cheap AV receiver and hook it up to my PC and monitor.

You can find a lot of used systems on eBay and Amazon, and the games are incredibly cheap ($0.01 to $15 is what I've been spending so far). Unfortunately, smoker damage doesn't seem to ever be a big item listed, so unless you want to spend tons more on a factory sealed collector's item, you're rolling the dice. Of course, you can always contact the seller and ask. Sometimes by communicating with them they'll throw in extra parts and games (Amazon Marketplace is win).Macbeth wrote:

And if you want to buy a new Dreamcast, I heard some factory's pressing some new ones. You're on your own with the games, though.

Anyway congrats on getting most of the smell out
If you have an X360 or a PS3, Sonic's Ultimate Sega Collection will pretty much cover your Sonic of Genesis needs. It even has spin-off Sonic titles. With some adjustment, it's pretty easy on the PS3 remote controller (edit: I guess I've been watching more Blu-ray than playing PS3 games). I got the Genesis to cover some of the other titles that weren't bundled.Macbeth wrote:

As to the invite, the last time I drank anything was 2000, and that was just a glass of rum & coke foisted off onto me. Why let it go to waste?

I got a PSU from my grandad once, he was a smoker, so it constantly blew out smokey smells.
At the time, though, I smoked, so didn't really mind. Helped cover up the smell off my clothes from my parents lol.

Who wants their Sega to convey a masculine aura of marine notes (whatever that is).
No more stench for me, I just quit a week ago after smoking for about 12 years. Never noticed the smell when I smoked but now I can smell a cigarette from miles away.....o well I guess.

Please tell that to all your smoker buddies who hang out right next to doorways and stick their cig-stuffed fingers out their car window while the wind blows it into mine. Knowing how it cakes up on a mere flat metal surface, I doubly don't want it in my lungs, and I don't want to breathe the brain-barrier-breaking shit that was just in theirs.El Beardo wrote:

@ Ted - thanks man, it's been kinda tough tbh
@ unnamed - I have no influence over smokers now that I've quit, sorry
